  • Wedding Dress Questions/Discussions

I hope my photo isn't too big but I'm kind of computer stupid so please forgive me! This is me on my wedding day and my dress. It was a very simple, at home wedding and I didn't want a fancy, poofy, gigantic dress. My husband wasn't even there physically, it was an online ceremony. My husband's family wishes to hold a (somewhat) traditional Afghan wedding when he moves here and I'm looking for the fancy dress for that. What websites or designers are good? For that ceremony, I want a traditional, colorful Afghan dress. I'm even debating going to Afghanistan to find it. That would be expensive, but the added bonus is getting to meet the rest of my husband's family and seeing the beautiful land for myself.

The "downside" to all this wedding hoopla is that the family wants me to wear a traditional, white, American style wedding dress to the reception. I don't particularly care for this type of dress. Some of them are very pretty but I don't want to look like everyone else. I don't believe in spending tons of money on one day either. I would rather travel or spend the money on my house. Since we are already married and have gone on honeymoon, I don't know that white is appropriate and I fear spilling something on it since I am sort of clumsy, haha. Does anyone have any suggestions that would fit my wants? What did y'all wear on your wedding day/receptions?

I think it is very kind and generous of my family to want to celebrate my marriage and I don't wish there to be any drama or fighting about something so minor as what to wear. I would be happy wearing the same thing to both events, but when I suggested this, I was met with some horrified looks!

Oh, that's a pretty dress but I guess they might be wanting you to wear something fancier for your wedding day. That might be too simple for what they want you to wear. Try looking at some of the "fancier" Afghan dresses online just to get an idea. This could be a good starting website www.zarinas.com. And more likely than not, they may have you alternate between wearing the white dress and a traditional dress as I think that's how most of the more modern weddings are planned. So expect to change clothes.

Once you have an idea of what type of dress you want, have them look around for something in Afghanistan and send you pictures of different options. That's what my sister did except it was my cousin who did the favour.

As far as money is concerned, it is they who will be buying the clothes not you. :P

Well you can always try different things tell your family you are not comfortable with wearing the traditional white dress or you want to try something new you can always wear and lehenga , a sari , the afghani traditional dress or something like that.
or if they really want you to wear a white dress it doesnt necessarily have to be big puffy gigantic over the top dress you can try a simple nice cute dress not too crazy since it is your day do what you want but without hurting anyones feelings i wore a dress from Davids Bridal It was nice and simple not too expensive and was very beautiful .
        this is what i wore.

Shamala- yes, I agree that for the formal wedding the dress should be fancier. I have no problem with that. I just felt weird getting too dressy for a proxy wedding, you know? That is a great idea to have someone take photos of the dresses in Kabul for me to choose from. I had not thought of that!

Tormushki-that is a really pretty dress. I like the simplicity but still interesting design.

I guess I need to just go and try stuff on. I did before, for the first wedding ceremony but nothing said "Hey, it's me, I'm your dress!" I found the one I posted already online, at www.dollyfashions.com so maybe I will try them. Zarinas sounds good too. Have you ever ordered from them? My biggest concern from online ordering is all the scams out there.

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies

Zarinas has been around for a long time.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Nope I havn't ordered from them but if you check under "Afghan formal dresses" they have some dresses which might help you get an idea of what's out there. I think the founder is a young Afghan Nuristani woman brought up in the West. She began Afghan cooperatives comprised of female artisans and seamstresses making the dresses in Afghanistan and she sells them to the public and the women get paid a portion as well. So I guess it helps the Afghan women too. When I browsed through the prices of the Afghan dresses, they seemed to fall at just a little above $200.00 which isn't bad. I may have ordered from them but my parents especially my mom visit Afghanistan often and bring me lots of clothes which I don't want to waste. But an advantage to buying yourself is you getting to choose what you like.

The above are all nice choices that are all just a little above $200.00. I think they're pretty and according to the description they are also made from silk.

I'd say if you like any of these, go for it. The company seems pretty reliable and as AdminKhan said they've been around for some time now--about 10 years I believe.
