  • -a little help ladies-

i have to go to this gathering...and every one is expected to wear neckties..if i wear a necktie with a scarf, would it not just look out of place and awkward? or should i just go with out wearing one knowing everybody else would be wearing one? yes the ladies too..

i also have to go to this vietnamese wedding in july. i have never been to a wedding or a party in canada and i don't even know them that well..i don't want to wear a dress and i don't think wearing dress pants or jeans would be a smart idea...what should i do?

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

    I personally hate neckties...

but what if you wear your hijab like this >

but honestly I wouldn't worry and feel out of place.

As far as the wedding if you don't want to wear a dress, do you wear afghan / indian clothes? that might be too fancy tho :| Although you can wear plain afghan /indian.

I don't know how you wear your scarf normally, so I can't give too many suggestions. But I have a friend, who, on a daily basis, wears her scarf in a way that you might be interested in, which will help with the necktie. If you're using a square scarf, after putting it on, and the triangle ends come to your front, you wrap them around your neck so it doesn't leave anything hanging. Though it may look like you are choking yourself, it helps keep the front clear.

No, you are right, jeans to a wedding, not a good idea. If I were you, I would wear an evening dress, Western style. I went to a cross-cultural wedding a few weeks ago, and because there are so many different people, as opposed to an Afghan wedding, you see so many different kinds of dress. Usually, in those sorts of occasions, everyone tries to wear their own traditional dress, but its bridal or evening wear of course. Like Iqra said, Afghan, Pakistani or Indian is not a bad idea. However, you could even try Asian wear. Some Chinese dresses are really nice. They have high collars, often a lot of embroidery and are usually silk. I have a pair myself, however, mine is velvet. And the cherry on top, they are very sangeen clothes. Covered from shoulders to toes.

If you're sticking to something like this (I know it is a big if), you can choose a pair of wrap around (knee-high or shorter) heels, to match the dress which will look very nice with the slit in the back.

If it is mixed ceremony, then obviously, that big of a slit is not a good idea. Sometimes you can find really nice silky pants (straight cut), and a white one would match this, and not look bad in the slightest. And a pink matching scarf, handbag and sandals or shoes. But then again, not every Asian dress is going to have a slit in it. Mine does, at the back, but I wear black under it, and it looks perfectly fine.

This pic of course, is just an idea of Asian dress and what you can do with it. At the end, it comes down to your taste and what you are comfortable in, and of course, your budget. As I said earlier, you could go for a simple evening dress or traditional clothes, which will look very nice in a multicultural environment.

(Google is not the best of wedding wear shops)

These might work. Then wear something that has a neck - like a turtle neck. Then you can wear a bowtie. Or even if you don't wear a high neck, the bowtie covers your neck anyway. InshAllah this will help.

Vietnamese weddings I can't really help you there - but I highly suggest dress modest because its probably not divided.

Let us know what you do!

I had to wear a tie in highschool, for the last couple years I got away with it coz of my hijaab, so I guess you could just wear like a cardi on top or whatever so no one can tell.

It also depends what you wear the tie with, I had it with uniform, so like a collared white shirt, so it went with fine, but I don't know how you plan to wear it. I don't think it'll look out greatly out of place, if everyone else is wearing it.

yeah i am still looking for advice. i didn't want to reply right ahead because i wanted every one to speak first so i don't go crazy with its and bits of the details...

                here is the truth...
i don't have a problem with wearing a tie but i know for sure that by the third hour it's going to make me want to strangle myself. i have tried it and things like that don't work for me. it feels like the damn thing is staring at me.

as for the dress, i don't want to be overdressed.

i have recently started wearing wrap around scarves but normally i wear square scarves because of the shape of my face. i have these jaw bones that makes my face look square.

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

Just to get an idea you can try this link: www.bargello.com. Under the evening dresses link they have some amazing outfits. They're very pricey, but it will make your decision a tad easier by seeing the diverse range they offer. I am not a fan of online shopping, especially for occasions, but before one, I always search a lot to make sure what I want to narrow my options down to.

Something like this (though I don't like the way she is standing) will look really nice too. http://www.bargello.com/detailed_vie...en2/3043-l.jpg (Couldn't get it to work as an inserted pic).

my friend from tanzania has some really nice punjabi suits. i am going to raid on her closet. if i don't find anything good there then i will buy something. i don't want to pay that much for something that will end up in my closet for the next 10 years since i don't go out that often.
