                      • I have the black one with all the mirrors. I love wearing it, especially when the sun shines, because then the light is reflected off me. When I wear it or Pakistani Shalwar Kameez, then people here always stop me and admire the clothing, and this gives me an opportunity to share about Pakistan-to try and raise awareness.

                        • I probably wear more Pakistani clothing and Kochi dresses here in America than "western" clothing. I guess I do have a bit of pride, it makes me feel more connected to those people I love. I also sell imports from Pakistan, but although I get a lot of compliments on mine, it takes a "special" kind of American to wear ethnic clothing from Pakistan or Afghanistan.

                          • I saw a discussion about how dresses like the ones Yohhw posted above are Pashtun clothes and how all Afghans wear them.

See, those clothes aren't traditional "Pashtun" clothes per se. They are traditional Nomad clothes, that's why you don't refer to them as 'da Pashtano kali' but as 'da Abiyaano kali' or 'da Kochiyaano kali'. Yes, nomads happen to Pashtun, but that doesn't mean that historically, all Pashtuns dressed that way.

They are the clothes nomads wore. They were purposely made larger that needed so kids don't grow out of them. Also, all the embroilment on them is significant of nomad designs, they didn't have particular patterns like other dresses did; they in a sense threw all the pretty stuff they had on there because they knew they would keep that particular jora for a long time and they couldn't have too many pairs of clothes as their luggage would get too big.

So no, I don't believe we can take all the credit for it and baptize it as a Pashtun dress. Because historically, Pashtuns from the villages and cities didn't dress like that. Recently, we have discovered the beauty of those clothes and now Kochi dresses are becoming commercialized.

Here are the traditional dresses from different provinces:

Daa zma lewanay Zrra gorah, daa sta lewanee Mina..
Za ba da Sahra warnakam da Iran pa Golestan,
Dalta za yao & yakta yam, halta zar zma pa Shaan
                            .
