look for more lightweight fabrics, a bit above your knees in length, less concpicous coloring--a type that will easily blend you in and be appropriate for school or an everyday outing.

Personally that dress seems a little short and doesnt have sleeves. It is kinda hard to find right modest dresses, for us, i always have a hard time, but get creative. Now maxi dresses are on sale and huge for this season, buy a few, and since they reach till your feet you dont have to wear pants.....find a cute long sleeved cardigan, particularly an abstract color, and wear it over....then a nice necklace, with a hijab, would look beautiful!

While i was in Kabul, i did wear medium sized dresses, over slacks or trousers, with a scarf.....though it was pretty warm, but mehhh it was whatever.
          Laila,

I frequently wear Shalwar Kameez, not just in Pakistan. Of course I do live in a part of California that is very liberal when it comes to dress styles. I feel more connected to my sisters in Pakistan when I wear clothing from Pakistan-and in a way it often opens doors for me to tell people about my projects in Pakistan. If you find them hard to come by, remember that I do sell them, made in Pakistan by my women's centre.

              Laila-

Yes-should I bring such stuff with me when we meet? I sell shalwar kameez, as well as more nomad style, as well as crochet kameez, shawls, and scarves. I don't usually have the numbers that Afghan Bazaar has, but do sell them.

I think they look very nice over pants. One of the fun things about having started a Sewing Centre is that there are more people around me that like to sew, and show me what they have learned. I do not sew! Let me bake a cake any day over sewing.....At least then it is clear that I didn't go to Pakistan to tell them what they needed, but rather I went there, and they told me what they needed.

                    Oh Zayam khorey,

my cousin-in-law does the same.......she has her own sewing center in Kabul for uneducated, and widows. She teaches these women how to sew and make clothing. Then they work there, everyday many clothes are being made...mostly shalwar kameez. The thing that i honor my cousin for doing this, she doesnt charge the women at all, they come and sew and make a living for themselves. She sold all her wedding jewelry to start this. And she in fact makes no profit for herself, she just gives women a job where they are comfortable to attend.

yeah shalwar tops look beautiful over pants, my mom does it all the time. She and I feel more comfortable wearing like this. Plus, i love the colors and designs, they would look great over white pants

Our centre is similar, they girls/women are taught sewing skills and do not pay to learn. We supply the sewing machines, and supplies as well. I have Bake Sales here to pay for their needs.

That is exactly what she does.

She sold all her wedding jewelry to start it up, and supplied absolutely all the sewing machines, fabrics, etc.

Goodness, so good to hear you have done the same. I swear, i was so happy to hear such a thing was being done for those women back home.

So for the clothing your ladies make, do you sell them here too? like in your own home

I sell them at Fairs, and sometimes have a few imports when I have a Bake Sale, and when I give presentations about Swat Valley, I bring them as well.

I still haven't experienced the delight of tasting your bakery, BUT I am going to soon, and I's soooo darn excited!!! Bless you for your work! We Swatyane peghle appreciate you

Oh, and I'll be working at your center when(ever) I'm in Swat, too. I totally need to learn to sew and interact with the women I'll be working with in the future. I was thinking of creating a new group of women to do that with, but good thing you've already offered and created space for that!

With the kind of dresses you've posted, definitely not. Like one of the male members said, there is already so much going on, why would you want extra layers. I prefer straight cut dresses which go below the knee, with pants and if necessary, because of the sleeve length, I'll wear a cardigan over the top. At least three quarters of my wardrobe is made up of three quarter dresses. I prefer not to wear a cardigan over the top of some of them, so I make sure I wear them in gatherings or places I know I won't interact with men. Like Gulalai, I've bought dresses in the past that I have never worn, that are still waiting for that perfect occasion to come along, solely because wearing things on top or under just ruin the look of the dress. Overall, I prefer to wear things on top rather than underneath dresses, especially with maxi's, I can't stand the sight of straps.

Something like these (middle picture has to be below the knee):
