  • question about music

haven't you guys noticed that most new pashto songs are made by afghans? Pakistan doesn't really come up with any new pashto songs and the ones that do come out of here are crap 90% of the time unless its a cover of a song originally from afghanistan.

Pakistan has millions more of us and it has better facilities for these type of things yet all the good songs and most new songs are by afghans (even if they live abroad).

So whats going on? why are we so useless?

because afghanistan's pashto music has been influenced by various other provinces within the country while pashto music from pashtunistan keeps going back to the roots or adapting from bollywood or the rest of pakistanies. to you guys, it seems like there is no innovation when you compare it to afghan music. you are not familiar with the music from the rest of our provinces so it sounds new to you.
you will not find an afghan singer in afghanistan that has not sung at least one song in pashto. and it's not just because they care for the language. they gain popularity by singing songs in a language they don't understand because pashtuns who have listened to pashto music all their lives don't get modern beats like that from the singers they usually follow.

Most 'new' Pashto music in Afghanistan is actually remakes of old folk songs from the last few decades.

Pakistan has many great Pashto singers and do produce quality Pashto songs. Haroon Bacha, Karan Khan, Hamayoun Khan, Waheed Achakzai and Bakhtyar Khattak are only a few examples. The only thing I will say is that in Pakistan, the music scene is mostly dominated by Peshawar and surrounding areas and you rarely hear any songs from Balochistan or tribal areas so sometimes sounds all the same and repetitive.

It might appear that Afghanistan is producing more music because Afghanistan has been at war for 40 years and the relative peace has allowed people to produce music while it was almost non existant a decade ago. I would agree one the fact you rarely see any Pashtun Pakistani singers from foreign countries while there are many from Afghanistan in UK, Germany etc. Don't know the reason for it.

Art only flourishes when there is peace and people have money to produce art. With peace and prosperity, Pashto music will only get better.

Bro there are tons of good singers and musicians in every part of Pashtunistan, you just have never heard of them.

Tell me the region you want to hear from and I will send you links.

I get the feeling that overall, Pashtuns (particularly those outside their native lands) don't really listen to their traditional music as much.

Sure, the Rabab is famous... everyone knows that style of Pakhto, but do you guys know what "cheeghaka" and "japanay" are? Do you know what "Bandar" is? Or "Dastan"?
How about "Badala"? Ever heard of "Kakari Ghari"?
These are others genres of Pashto, besides the common "Tapay" and "Attan"

Music of Loy Kandahar is very different and not popular among Pashtuns from other regions although imo its the best.

Music from Loya Paktia is also distinguished, but is well known (in Afghanistan at least).

When you hear Kandahari songs, the first thing you'll notice is the shocking amount of Farsi.

                  "chashman" often instead of "stargi"

                  Example:

Tarik Khan mast japani - YouTube

3 minutes in, he says "spin sadaf larey dandaan - dzaan ba kam pur taa qurban"

Pakistani pashto musicians mostly make songs for the ****ty pashto film industry while pashto musicians from afghanistan will make **** cuz they wanna. Also in afghanistan many non pashtuns will also sing pashto songs like in pakistan i can think of a total of idk 3-4 people who mightve done that.
The next thing that ive realized is that afghanistan has a more "support your local music" kinda thing going on so thats why youll see many people from khost listening to shahadat tanai(RIP) play live rather than listen to nazia iqbal on their phones. And because of the support for their local musicians they have a lot more musicians making enough money to record ****.

Id disagree. There is a vast amount of people from waziristan kurram bannu etc that listen to that kinda music.

There are some who sing in their local style. But they are few and not in the mainstream.

Yes you're right. Although each region you mentioned also has its own music.

Last night I heard this Waziristani song

sanrye ma lamsai lamsai - YouTube

It's the first Pashto song I've heard in a while where I understood less than 60% of what was said.
