Yes they were. They were converted to Muslims, i believe in the 1800's if i am not mistaken. The reason why my mothers side of the family came from Arabistan, was to help spread Islam to Nuristanis. Now Nuristanis are very devoted to Islam.
Nuristan was once part of Laghman....and till today, Laghman still has many Nuristanis. Nuristani people are very generous, they love and are respectful towards Pashtuns, you have no idea how nice they are to us. Nuristan became its own province not that long ago. The province borders Laghman, Kunar, and Pakistan.
Though majority of Nuristanis speak Dari, there are plenty of them that still speak Nuristani, and some even speak Pashai lol. They are considered as the white European people of Afghanistan
^ When I heard my father-in-law speak it (who is a Nurestani) it sounded like mix of Pukhto and Dari, that's why Nurestanis themselves prefer speaking Pukhto or either Dari. This is what it sounds like;
^ Well, their spoken Pukhto is excellent, and this goes for majority of Nurestanis all across Afghanistan. Prior to US invasion Pukhtoons didn't allow their children to marry Nurestanis, but since last few years (not exaggerating) at least half of Nurestani population in Laghman is married with Pukhtoons/Pukhtanas and therefore it's becoming more and more common for them to speak Pukhto as their first language. They are actually very accepting of either Pukhto or Dari because they are in general very patriotic about Afghanistan and unlike many of us, they don't play blame-game regarding Afghans' situation.
^arent they mad that they were converted to Islam by force?
Ummm i did hear some stories that many Nuristanis were 'forced'...i honestly do not know if there were actually murdering and other things done.... but i also heard some stories that they slowly embraced it. But now, Nuristanis in general are very devoted to Islam. I do have some Nuristanis in my family, so i will make sure to ask.

They don't complain though because they are very devoted Muslims now. Though, there are still a lot of Nurestanis who allow love-marriages, shaking hands with men and even mixed gatherings. So in this regard, they do have some 'Western' thinking in them.
