For eastern music my favourite artists have to be
Ustad Zakir Hussain - Tintal Tabla Solo - Kolkotta - YouTube
Zakir Hussain, a master tabla player from india. He was interestingly in a group with British guitarist John McLaughlin called Shakti
John Mclaughlin L. Shankar Get Down And Sruti 1978 - YouTube
John uses a special acoustic guitar with have the frets literally "cut" away giving the ability to slide and bend the strings several notes higher or lower than original note very much like a sitar can.
As far as actual Afghan artists go I'm not too familiar.
Aziz Herawi is a fine Afghan lute player
