  • Movie Review: Real Steel (2011)

Over the weekend, I saw the Hollywood movie "Real Steel" starring Hugh Jackman, and produced by Disney's Touchstone Pictures and Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks. It was a good movie, about a washed-out former boxer named Charlie Kenton whose sport has been now become dominated by boxing robots, in the year 2020. Charlie is living on the margins, always owing money to others, and trying to eke out a living by promoting and coaching robots in underground fighting matches.

One day he learns that his old girlfriend has died, and the 11-year old son whom he had with her is suddenly dropped onto his doorstep. He wants nothing to do with the boy Max, and is ready to give him away to relatives, when he is given the offer of a large sum of money if he keeps the boy for the summer while the rich relatives go on vacation.

Initially miserable together, Charlie and his son Max gradually bond with each other, after Max accidentally finds a discarded fighting robot in a junkyard, which they jointly repair and train for the fighting ring. The robot, named Atom, possesses the unique feature of being able to mimic or shadow other people's movements, in order to learn their fighting style. And so, talented ex-boxer Charlie and feisty son Max gradually take their robot up through the boxing ranks to their ultimate dream - a professional match for the world championship.

While this is a science-fiction movie, it is similar to other famous movies like Rocky, Karate Kid, and The Champ produced by Hollywood. It features a lot of action-packed special effects like Transformers, etc, but it's mainly about fighting spirit, father-son feelings, redemption, and the triumph of the underdog over tremendous odds.

Check out this movie - you'll like it.

It also has a great soundtrack.

The movie is PG-13, so you wouldn't be able to see it anyway, without adult accompaniment.

But kids especially will enjoy the special fx.

Here is a clip I found, of main character Charlie teaching his robot how to box:

So, as I've said, this movie has a lot in common with movies like Rocky, The Champ, Karate Kid, etc. But the reason why such movies have been so popular, is because they're inspiring and fun to watch, and you'll find yourself cheering for the underdog hero.

Here's another fight scene from the movie, between 2 robots:

And here's the final match between the heroic challenger and the big bad champion:

So, lots of good action - I liked it more than the Transformers movies and their mindless explosions - and very polished special fx.

But again, the story has more than just action, it has a nice backstory about a father who was a deadbeat dad, but who redeems himself and becomes a hero in his son's eyes.

One of the best movies I have seen in a long time there are many underlying story lines beneath the main one of fighting I loved every minute of it - and this is coming from a girl... My fiancé also loved it

hugh jackmans smug face pisses me off. but i think the twilight zone or the outer limits basically did this same story like 50 yrs ago.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.
