Oddessa in the Ukraine was also referred to as the Paris of Russia before the first world war.
It was a great city with a thriving culture but then the First World War and the Civil wars destroyed that. It has never been the same for almost a hundred years.
The same happened to Kabul (referred to as the Paris of the East).
But in both cases it was mainly the lucky few who benefitted. Life for most was not that good.
War in both cases was a neccesity. The people needed to defend themselves and as the saying goes "After war, nothing is ever the same".---
To advise others is an easy matter, the difficulty is accepting advice -- since it is bitter for those who follow their
own inclinations and desires.
