First of all people in here are confused by the definition of the word Pashtun with ideology of nationalism that dates back to Mughal era when Afghans suffered the most not by Delhi Sultanate but by their own disunity which resulted with years of Bloody tribal war, and this was enjoyed by Safivad and Mughal as divided people are easy to rule. Thanks to folks like Baba Hotak and many others local famous and infamous generals and local governors that not only supported Afghan unity but also organizing powerful forces of combined Afghan tribes to defeat the Eastern Shia influenced of Akbar’s decadences, and hard-core Safivadis in the west. Some 350 years have passed since the Racial and linguistic unity building and mixed with modern BS has further created more confusion than ever before. I am very sure if someone of said this “would not of made since Being Shia does not make you any less Pashtun. There are atheists Pashtuns, agnostic Pashtuns, Christian Pashtuns, Hindu Pashtuns, Sikh Pashtuns” some 250 years ago Ahmad Shah baba would of committed suicide. In fact the basic foundation of Pashtun national unity depends on Islam and Hannifah School in comparison to western Shia Iran and Eastern multi-religious Sultanate of Mughal. In fact there would have been no nationalistic empire of Abdali or war with Mughals or Safivads.


The Pashtun unity is founded upon basic lingustic, religous and simple rules of Hanifa School, not based on Qawmiyat or Nasil, and nejat. Yes the racial term Afghan term would be applicable to all of them as mentioned by Kallzai but not the term “Pashtun” since Pashtun loosely applied to similar regional speaking Linguistic who were either native, immigrants, invaders by that means would include anyone speaking same language including Indic races, Mongolide Hazara races, Althia-turkic races, and Arab stocks. Now I fully understand the notion of Pashtun overtaking the racial term “Afghan”, since majority of afghan tribes from 65%-75% of them worldwide speaks Pashtu thus the term “Afghan” is analogous to the term “Pashtun” despite the word Pashtuns new despite the historical application of Afghan is old as 5000 years old. Having said that Pashtun’s dominated religion is Sunni, Hannifa school and the notion of the word “Pashtun” is new and bounded deeply to Islam not to Christianity, Sikhism, Hinduism, Shaism, or Judaism. So please pick your words intelligently and be clear to what you mean giving details would help. Yes you can be of any race and still be considered Pashtun, Persian or Arab as long as you speak those language ie Arabic/Pashtu/Farsi, but be clear on this that just because you speak Arabic does not mean you are of Arab stock, just by speaking Persian you cannot be of Iranic stock. I personally use the word Iranic only to apply to Turko-Arab-Sassani and Palvi-Median shia believing stocks of Persia, not to races beyond Persia.

Not all Pashtuns follow Hannifah, and not all Pashtuns agree with your analysis.

A Pashtun can be of any faith as long as he/she belongs to the reconised tribes. I guess you maybe blind or just plain dumb, but if a Pashtun from Kurram shook my hand, I wouldnt see him as a Hannifah or a shia, I would see him as a Pashtun.
