  • Art depicting Afghans/Pashtuns by non-Pashtuns

In this thread please post the memorable paintings and drawings of Pashtuns that you have come across by non-Pashtuns.

The painting above is simply called "In Afghanistan" and was painted by NYC artist Eleanor Gilpatrick. In her own words she describes her inspiration:

"It is a based on a photograph in an exhibit by Afghan women university students, 2005. The photo shows that Afghan women are not forced to wear the Burqa and can travel without a male family member, such as on this remote village road. But Taliban and religious terrorist rule has influenced women to cover their faces with a Chadar (scarf). Before, women would only cover their heads, not their faces. I had permission to use the photo as a basis for my painting from the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC), which sponsored the exhibit."

This is a small collection of paintings depicting Afghan women by various non-Afghan artists that I had saved in an online album.

Kandahar Lady of ranks.jpg Kandahar Lady of Rank, Engaged in Smoking

This lithograph was taken from plate 29 of 'Afghaunistan' by Lieutenant James Rattray.
Rattray does not tell us much about the subject of this portrait, Begum Jan, other than her status as a 'lady of rank' in Kandahar. He writes: "Many of these Afghan ladies have rendered their names celebrated in history by their conjugal attachment and devotion to the cause they supported." He gives as an example Shah Shujah's favorite wife, Wafadar Begum, who was immortalized in prose by Alexander Burnes after courageously rescuing him from imprisonment by the Sikh ruler Ranjeet Singh.
Rattray also wrote of the brave widow of Akram Khan, who was a powerful chief of Zamindawar to the south of Kandahar. When Khan was executed for refusing to tender allegiance to Shah Shuja in 1842, his widow threw off her burkha and led his tribe to battle astride her husband's horse. After a desperate struggle she was driven back. Rattray wrote: "A cause so just and a devotion so noble, merited a more successful termination."

Musafira, Do you notice how the lady is holding a weapon? What does that tell us?
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!
