I think the interior of Australia is more a semi-desert ---no? The clay in that image is reddish---a rare kind of occurance-

i haven't been to any areas that are semi desert, other than like that picture. i have been to many inland areas that are more abundant with wildflowers, in the right season and still have the grasses and small bushes.
it is red sandy soil. not sure how much is clay.
