      Nice, Looks beautiful.

Three people strike me as very similar who are all muslim. The kurds, The Berbers and The Pashtuns/Afghans.

Do Berbers speak another language besides arabic and do Berbers from Algeria and maroc undrestand each other?

Yes of course ! We have our own language and our own alphabet and our own culture !

Most Berbers can speak both Berber and Arabic but the ones living in mountains only Berber.

There are slightly different pronunciations between different areas and some different words but we can all understand each other. I think if there would be a problem of communication between a Moroccan Berber and an Algerian one, it would be because of the accent, not from the words.

        Here's the Berber alphabet :

Love Morocco. Spent time there some years back - Marrakech, the non-European beach at Essaouria (there's a famous Jewish section there, I remember), Fez, the Atlas Mountains. Downside was being fed aubergines and at the hotel buffet next to the fresh tuna, and lamb, they had 'cochon' meat. They serve it up for the French, and fortunately I have a tourist level of conversational French, but being a Muslim country, you'd think they'd have a few principles (i.e. keep well and truly separate) and label it lahme khinzeer or something like they do in Muscat or Dubai.

I'm a collector of rugs and carpets from lots of my travels across the Muslim world and I have a hand-dyed Berber rug that looks a lot like an Uzbek rug that I have.

When I went to a Berber village, they had this donkey market with thousands of donkeys and we got harassed by a Berber who was selling us junk. I refused in Arabic and then French, but he didn't get it and started calling me a Yahudi which was ironic because there are still Berber Jews and many Berber are soft Muslims and pro French. Not all, I admit, cause I know two Algerian Berbers who are total opposite ends of the scale.

Oh, and in downtown Marrakech, they were all into Bollywood.

          Nice photo share Al Hanif.

But you will agree they look like they derive from Greek letters like theta, epsilon?

Yes, but it's just a coincidence.

Greek alphabet and Berber alphabet are both derivated from the Phoenician alphabet.

The extinct Atlas or Barbary lion (panthera leo leo) ranged these mountains and North Africa the last one was shot in 1922. Few have survived in zoo's and private collections. The cousin is the Persian lion about 300 survive in the gir forest in India.

                          Are you a zoologist ?

Do you happen to know why this Lion was extinct ? Was it because of hunting or because of the lack of food ?

Hunting no doubt contributed to the extinction of the Barbary Lion, but the ecological changes brought about by cultivation seem to have been the major cause. Forests were degraded as a result of cattle-grazing and the herds were well guarded. At the same time other food sources, such as deer and gazelle, became depleted. (Van den Hoek Ostende, 1999)

The Romans shipped them by the thousands to fight in the gladitoriums. The Atlas bear also now extinct as a result.

Great pictures, thank you. That is so saddening.

I have also heard about the Atlas bear before. It was extinct a long time ago and I can not even find a picture of him.

There is also the Barbary Leopard which is almost extinct :

Do you know how they used to capture Lions in the past when there was no anesthesic hypodermic bullets ?
