  • Forts/Castles/Citadels

    I like the ancient architecture.
Share any images of old castles, forts or citadels.

Generally they would be built on raised ground and some Europeans ones would have a moat (water) surrounding the castle and possibly a drawbridge. They could also have crenellations (cut out bits at the top) and could have holes from where from where the archers could shoot their arrows or boiling oil could be pured onto the invaders. They may have had catapults, cannons or modern artillery.

The time period and location are not restricted, they can be modern forts or ancinet castles.

It would be nice if you could name your castle and/or give some basic details but that is not necessary.

And please don't post images that are too big!

What a good idea for a thread - useful, constructive, and takes the viewer
on a trip to these places for a few minutes while viewing !

I love Edinburgh Castle - great to see
and the pics of Agra Fort are superb. I like that place a lot.

              I will put some later.
              Good avatar too Haris.

I was on a cruise along the Rhine over a year ago. I saw atleast 20 different fortresses and castles lining the river. I have since lost the photos but it was very worthwhile.

I've always preferred classical/historic architecture to modern/contemporary nonsense.

                  Krak des Chevaliers, Syria

This is what it would have looked like when it was newly built:

^ Oh, I have wandered around those ruins, plus a few other castles in Syria.

the Krak des Chevaliers is the best preserved, though.

As far as the Rhine River trip - you know, those castles look great from the train, but for some reason [weather often] the photos don't look AS
spectacular as what you see when you are there.

So don't feel too bad about missing the chance to get some.
Remember that Lorelei place along the way, famous in poetry?

I went in the winter and only saw them at a distance but it was still nice and you are right, a photo can never fully capture the essence at the time.

I did not travel along the whole length of the river, was only near Koeln so perhaps I did not see it or I may have forgotten it but I do know of it. The giant rock next to the river.
