  • portrait sketches done at kandahar, 1977.

when i was in kandahar in 1977, i did a lot of quick portrait sketches. i was doing them as i travelled through europe and asia, for financing my travels. i would be delighted to hear of someone whose grandfather or uncle or relative ,was one of my customers.
they were done on grey paper in black and white pastels. some were done in colour.
a long shot, i know, but it would be a nice suprise to be remembered.

no, the portraits i did were sold to the men i portrayed. probably cheaper , at that time, than having photographs taken. i did good likenesses, (even if i do say so, myself) never had any complaints. still do them, sometimes, but australians are not so keen to sit for portraits so i don't do it commercially anymore.

no, sorry. the pics i did were sold to the men portrayed. so there might be some hanging on the walls in kandahar homes, i hope. at the time, it would probably have been cheaper to get one of my sketches than a photo and i did good likenesses (even if i do say so, myself) had no complaints. don't do them commercially anymore as australians are not keen on getting them done.
