The way I see it: when visiting new people, one is never quite sure of what is expected. In these instances, one starts as a guest, watches and waits and slowly joins in with the conversations, having learned a few basic rules.
Deep and searching questions are one thing, but it is rather impolite to go in and start throwing opinions around.
