Yes I agree, the reason why Ali didn't take out his sword was because at that time Islam was a new and young religion; He (Ali) did not want to create "fitnah" in the ummat e Muslima. After all, he was Shere Khuda (Lion of God), who could fight him. So He (AS) let it go in the best interest of Islam.
