Ali's claim was stronger than Abu Bakr's, by the way. I always felt that way. However, it was in the interest of early Islam to have Abu Bakr rule and that's why Ali abdicated. Abu Bakr had more raw support than Ali. There were massive uprisings in favor of Ali but along with Musailma's movement, they were brutally crushed.
