  • Well, Dreamer my friend, Sikhism was developed to combine the best of Sufism in Islam and the spirituality in Hinduism. After the initial centuries, Sikhism assumed a martial nature to ward of threats to its existence. To a true Sikhs, a baptized Sikh, a Khalsa (derived from the Persian word Khalis=pure) eating meat and consuming alcohol is prohibited. But the fact is that many Sikhs (including me) are not baptized and they consume liquor and eat meat. This too has to do with the nature of the people who form the core of Sikhism, the Punjabis. Punjabis are hardly the ones to restrain themselves from life's excesses, so they eat, drink and make merry.
