  • Nur Jahan Kandahari

GOOD IDEA for a post, Shlombey!

In fact, I am reading the third of Indu Sundaresan's trilogy, about Jahanara.
It covers a little of Nur Jahan's last years too.

Her first two books were superb. She managed to bring Nur Jahan's life into vivid detail without a single revealing scene of the type which modern fiction demands. That was quite an accomplishment by itself, in my opinion
I recommend them highly: The Twentieth Wife
    and
    Feast of Roses

In the current volume, the author has Jahanara go and seek advice from her famous relative. Which is a reasonable idea that COULD have happened.

The author stresses the irony that Nur Jahan's creative and imaginative building projects all over the Moghul Empire were ignored. She was never allowed to even see their completion.

She started the Itimad Daula one well before her political demise. Not when she was in exile as the above says incorrectly.

She created gorgeous gardens laid out in the Persian style in Kashmir and elsewhere.

She's also credited for having INVENTED Attar of Roses. That was before her reign as Empress.

As Empress, she made new attractive dress styles for women, and set the example of elegant life, though within the realms of decency and propriety.
Unlike too many other women who have reigned in the world's history.

As far as ENDURING contributions to the world, Nur Jahan DID design herself and oversee the building of her parents' tomb on the banks of the Yamuna River. It was the first entirely white marble tomb in greater India.

Shah Jehan copied her model and improved much on it for the famous Taj. Particularly the style of inlaid precious stones like lapis, carnelian, amber, I think, and many others.

It's often completely forgotten that she was born in Qandahar en route.
The actual irony is that this future all-powerful, glittering Empress was ALMOST discarded by her parents, speaking of this type of tragedy shown in GYE's video today.

But a wise man came and counseled her parents to keep her, I think was the story. So they did.

It's a reminder to all: one never knows how one's child may turn out to be glorious. Never abandon them!
