what is the most immediate thing you say to a person when you find out one of their family member has passed away? i have found myself in the situation over three times in the past year and each time i was awkwardly speechless which i assume is not a good thing.
please no scripted speeches because it will stand apart from everything else i would be speaking so i don't want it to sound like i memorized it from some novel.

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

This probably is the wrong thread to say this but one of my friend's grandfather passed away..she was really sad about it came to university three days later..another one of my friends who wasn't able to attend the funeral saw her and tried to say that he felt sad..instead he ended up saying " oh im soo sorry about your grandfather, i couldnt come to the funeral...Inshallah next time"

The girl just stared at him

saying sorry is fine usually, why ? because the person is grieving and they couldnt care less of what sentiments other people have to offer..Their pain is usually too much to look for solace in other people's words..if its your friend the best thing you can do is let them know your there for them.

When your friend lose a love one you shouldn't upset them even more, what your friend did was really wrong.

well you can't really walk up to a person from let's say pakistan india or afghanistan and tell them you are sorry for their loss and expect that to cover everything.
speaking of stories...i have a few.
there was this old pakistani guy who lived here alone with his son who had some type of a heart condition about which we always talked whenever we saw each other..i had met the son a few times too. so then one day this guy disappears for a few months..so next time i see him i ask him how his son is doing and he says "he passed away"...so i did my sad version of fateha and went on about life until months later one day when i was walking to the mall and bumped right on the guy who was supposedly dead. he was with a bunch of other guys so i m 100% sure it was not his ghost!
daym, i feel like qratugai already...

well i know people in pakistan go nuts for like ten days till the person who died achieves the status of a saint but it really shouldnt be like that..There really is no fixed etiquette if thats what your asking, it depends on situation and how close the corpse in question is related to you

I say "inna lillahi wa inna illahi raje'oon.."
I found myself in such a situation recently where someone looked me in these eyes and said "My father passed away this morning." So horrible.
I usually say that Du'aa, say something along the lines of "May his/her soul rest in peace" and demand the person to let me know if he/she needs anything lol

I just went to a fateha last night.

they were Dari speakers so i had to tell them... "Zindagi sare khudetaan basha, khuda shoma ra sabr beta, bisyaar jigar khon shodom..."

                      things like that
