KP cabinet rejects 11pc share from Kerry-Lugar funding

    * Claims UN being asked to shift focus from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to other provinces

    Staff Report

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) cabinet on Monday rejected 11 percent share from the Kerry-Lugar funds, demanding the province be given 70 to 80 percent financial assistance instead.

The provincial government said the share offered to the province was just peanuts and the war against terrorism could not be won with this aid. The cabinet also regretted that the UN was being asked to shift its focus from KP to other provinces.

The cabinet observed that the security forces were conducting successful operations in various areas of the province with the cooperation of the peace lashkar.

Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, KP Minister for Information Mian Iftikhar Hussain said the Kerry-Lugar law was aimed at putting an end to terrorism and it was KP which had been badly affected by terrorism and recent floods.

The government spokesman said the province was getting four percent less aid under the agreed formula in Kerry-Lugar law, which was a great injustice to the people of the province. He said the province was getting only $124 million from the funding and rejected the aid distribution formula designed by the Economic Affairs Division.

The minister said the distribution process of Rs 20,000 per family for the flood affectees would begin from September 29 and payment would first be made in Lower Dir, Nowshera and Kohat.

The minister said the federal government had given a Rs 24 billion package to the province keeping in view the law and order situation, adding the provincial government had received Rs 12 billion in this regard. He said the federal government was to give Rs 3.8 billion in terms of security in July but it still had not paid that money.

    My Comments:
What is happening in KP is tragic.

It is KP which is loosing its young men, women, children and elderly to the so called US WoT. It is KP which is the worst flood affected province. But Pakistani politicians are busy pocketing the development funds for themselves and other provinces, whilst US gifts F-16s and other military toys to fire bomb even more Pashtun villages.
Pakistan Army was charging the impoverished province to pay up for "rescuing" civilians, even those who were rescued by the US helicopters.

Rather than declaring a one day holiday, 4-day Eid holidays were declared so that the solidarity with the flood victims could be "celebrated" in glittering markets by the rich feudals, Punjabis and their stooges.
