Ghani terms Mullah Omar's death 'an opportunity'

    August 05, 2015
    RECORDER REPORT
President Ashraf Ghani has described terrorism as common threat for both Afghanistan and Pakistan and said that Pakistan as a neighbouring country has responsibility to cooperate with Afghanistan in fighting Taliban and other terrorist groups to reduce violence in Afghanistan. Addressing a video conference from his hospital bed in Germany to media outlets, the Afghan president said that confirmation of the death of Mullah Omar by Afghanistan government had forced Taliban to confirm his death.

Describing the development as an opportunity, the president noted that the development marks end of a bitter phase of history and moving towards a bright future. Replying to a question, Ghani said that he had talked to Pakistani Prime Minister and chief of army staff and exchanged views on the development, situation in Afghanistan and the region. The president also said that the development had raised a ray of hope for ensuring peace and stability in the country, calling upon armed opposition groups to solve their political problems through negotiations. "Our main objective is peace, peace between the government of Afghanistan and Pakistan, because Afghanistan is faced with an undeclared war with Pakistan over the past 14 years and this war should be over and both the governments should cooperate in this regard," President Ghani stated.

He also said that regional and international terrorism as common threat for Afghanistan and Pakistan had been recognised at the summit of Shanghai Co-operation Organisation and BRICS held in Ufa city of Russia and stressed for a joint war against the menace. President Ghani who underwent a surgery in a hospital in Germany said the operation was successful and his health condition is improving.
"The past is not my concern. The future is no longer my concern either. One minute. One minute of everything at once. And anything before is nothing. Everything after nothing. Nothing in comparison to that one minute."
