Afghanistan to get access to India via Iran

    31 March 2014, 15:04 (GMT+05:00)

    Baku, Azerbaijan, March 31

    By Umid Niayesh - Trend:

Iran, Afghanistan and India are set to sign a memorandum of understanding which will give Kabul access to India via Iran's southern Chabahar Port, a senior Afghan official said.
Afghan foreign ministry spokesman Shakib Mostaghni said Afghanistan will connect to India via Iran in the near future, Iranian IRNA news agency reported on March 31.
He went on to say that the memorandum's text has been submitted to Indian officials to be studied.
Transit routes including Chabahar port have special importance for Afghanistan, the spokesman added. Earlier in mid-March Afghanistan's Foreign Minister Zarar Ahmad Osmani underlined that his country also wants to get access to the Black Sea via Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Georgia.
India offered to establish a direct shipping route to Chabahar Port in a bid to cut the costs of the transit of commodities between the two countries.
The offer was made during a meeting between Iran's Minister of Road and Urban Development Abbas Akhoundi and an Indian delegation of experts in Tehran in February.
India's ambassador to Iran, Shri D.P. Srivstava, who was present in the meeting, said that an Indian private company is ready to establish a direct shipping link between Chabahar and the Indian ports in order to bypass Dubai, where Indian container ships have to cross to reach Iran.
The Indian diplomat said the capital investment initially envisaged for the construction of a container terminal in Chabahar stands at $147 million.
In December 2013, Indian foreign minister, Salman Khurshid said that Chabahar port is the most economical route not only for access to Afghanistan but also for linkages with Central Asia.
He added that New Delhi is also interested in the port in order to ease the importation of minerals from Afghanistan.

    1. If Afghanistan uses the Chabahar port rather than the Pakistani-controlled Gwadar port in occupied Balochistan, this is bad news for the Pakistanis and good news for Afghans, Iranians and Indians.

    2. However more importantly Afghanistan is the gateway to resource rich central Asia with its billions if not trillions of natural resources and if the central Asian states use the Chabahar port rather than Gwadar, Pakistan will have suffered a major loss.

    3. With America now seeing that it is very difficult to attack Iran (I believe in their heart of hearts the Americans still want to attack Iran if they can, but don't think they are able to now) there is some sort of "rapprochement" between Iran and the USA.

If Iran becomes accepted by the "international community" (propaganda term used by the western media to refer to the west) then that means many other states will use Chabahar.

Balochi guerillas are making it very difficult for Gwadar to be used fully.

    4. This however would mean that Kabul governments cannot be too hostile to Iran as they would depend on them for access to the sea.

Iran and Pakistan both support proxy-groups in Afghanistan.

Iranian port to link Afghanistan with India: Afghan official

IANS | Kabul March 24, 2014 Last Updated at 19:06 IST

Iran, Afghanistan and India are going to sign a cooperation agreement in the near future which will link Afghanistan with India through the Chabahar port in southern Iran, an Afghan foreign ministry spokesman said.

Ministry spokesman Shakib Mostaghni said the conclusion of the tripartite agreement will be very beneficial, IRNA reported Monday.

Mostaghni also said that his country was trying to gain access to the Black Sea through Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Georgia.

He condemned a terrorist attack on a hotel in downtown Kabul Thursday that killed nine people including journalist Sardar Ahmadi and four members of his family.

He said the attack had been planned from outside Afghan borders and dismissed the Taliban's claims of being behind the attack as "untrue".

Iran, Afghanistan and India are going to sign a cooperation agreement in the near future which will link Afghanistan with India through the Chabahar port in southern Iran, an Afghan foreign ministry spokesman said.

        * The government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan wants to secure access to the Black sea via Turkmenistan (adjacent to the Caspian sea) and then Azerbaijan and Georgia.

This is a good policy and a long-term strategy that will probably continue irrespective of who the president is, as a lot of policies are formulated by technocrats and experts who have specialist knowledge politicians do not.

Turkmenistan for example is potentially the first country in the ex-Soviet Union to be able to reach western European standards of propserity as it has a small population and is resource rich.

But why would Iran let afghans use (who they treat like **** in iran) their port? Something is not right here. Why can't pakistan just let us use gwadar?

            Iran doesn't care about Afghans.

It cares about money and its interests.

India is a billion+ market, bigger than the EU.

Iran wants to get a piece of the pie in any trade coming from resource rich central Asia via Afghanistan also any business coming from Afghanistan in terms of the natural resources there.

This has nothing to do with friendship/brotherhood. This is politics, cold hard politics, just interests and money.

India wants an Iranian port to bypass its enemy Pakistan.

              MANY REASONS

*Gwadar Port is already handed over to China. Its them to decide
*The road network upto Karachi is more better than compared to Gwadar,Though in the years to come gwadar will have more better infra than even the karachi ports

Afghanistan,Pakistan and Tajikistan should try to develop a Completely new port within the les bela which would remain only specific for Tajikistan and Afghanistan and to be Under Afghanistan such as Gwadar is under china.

*Turkmenistan may become the first former Soviet Republic to reach western European standards of propserity.

It neighbours Afghanistan so this would be good for Afghanistan too.

how they treat refugees domestically has no bearing on the economics and politics of trade routes.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.
