50,000th ethnic Hungarian in Serbian province receives Hungarian citizenship
The 50,000th ethnic Hungarian in Vojvodina received Hungarian citizenship in a simplified procedure on Wednesday at a celebratory event attended by Foreign Ministry state secretary Zsolt Nemeth.
Nemeth told MTI in Subotica that Vojvodina Hungarians submitted the largest number of applications for Hungarian citizenship in proportion to their numbers. Additionally, they also “top the list” in minority efforts, such as the fight for autonomy.
“This is also where the implementation of autonomy is in the most advanced stage, considering that the Hungarian National Council is operating here with continually expanding authorities, it has increasingly stable financing and this gives us hope for the long-term survival Vojvodina Hungarians,” Nemeth said.
The total number of new Hungarian citizens has reached half million, he said. Those that apply for Hungarian citizenship before the end of this year will be able to vote at next year’s parliamentary election, he added.
Around 250,000 ethnic Hungarians live in Serbia’s northernmost province.
