  • China and Turkmenistan sign gas deal

China has signed an energy agreement for 25 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Turkmenistan. The deal was inked in the Turkmen capital Ashgabat. More gas channels are set to be built and a new gas field project will be completed by 2018 with an annual capacity of 30 billion cubic meters of gas.
Energy cooperation between the two countries started back in 2007. Turkmenistan has since become the largest source of imported gas for China, which is also its biggest export market.
By August 2013, China had imported 60 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Turkmenistan, which was supplied to 28 provinces as well as the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
The energy cooperation projects have provided more than 18,000 jobs to the Turkmen people.

    1. China is the 2nd biggest economy on earth, and biggest country (population) in the world.

Turkmenistan is its biggest foreign supplier of gas.

    2. In a decade or two Turkmenistan can become as developed as some of the Gulf Arab states.

    3. It would become Afghanistan's most prosperous and stable neighbour.
