Karma is such a bitch.
Pakistan has done everything in its power to erase the Indianness off of its history and culture. Yet, two things that continue to define what Pakistan is today are derived from two little towns in India that even Indians probably know little about. The town of Baraily in Madhya Pradesh gives us the Barailvi bhai of the Land of Five rivers, lead by their Maulvis Pen di Siris. Barailvi make up some 60-70% of Sunni Islam of Pakistan. Barail is where Khadim Hussain Rizvi get their inspiration from.
The town of Deoband in Utter Pradesh gives us the Macho Deobandi Islam of the north-west which comes in handy for the Pakistani state for its Jihad enterprises - all the name of national security and strategic depth, I must add.
Deobandis produce murderous Jihadis outfits and now have a madrassah in every square kilometer in the North-West and urban centers all across the country. (Almost all these Madrassah are recent created)
Deobandis consider the Barailvis Biddati (transgressors) from the righteous path.
Conversely, the Barelvis consider Deobandis to be disrespectful mindless morons who do not love the Prophet (SAW) enough. For if you do not love the Prophet (SAW) enough and you do not celebrate his Milaad (Deobandis dont), are you even a Muslim?
Eid e Milaad is just around the corner. Each year there is a dogma war of sorts this time of the year between the Barelvis and the Deobandis. Barelvis have used the Eid e Milaad celebration to gain lost territory. Lost to Deobandis.
Eid e Milaad celebration are getting more louder and more extravagant by Barelvis. The lights are fancier and expensive, and the stereo systems used to blare the musiiiic (er, the kalaam) are getting bigger and louder. Oh, and the bass too.
Eid e Milaad, coupled with the Blasphemy crusade and the anti-Ahmadi hate-war are vehicles used by the Barelvi maulvis of Punjab to gain ascendancy in a state that has patronized the Macho Deobandi Islam of NWFP.
The reason why the state historically co-opted the numerically inferior (some 25-40% of Pakistani sunnis are Deobandi) Deobandi maulvi of the NWFP (the Haqqania Maddrassah of Akora Khattak, the good Haqqanis of NWA) is because:
—the state was insecure about the threat of Pashtun nationalism and the Pashtunistan movement and the support, it feared, they received from Pan-Pashtun regimes from Afghanistan.The British empire did the same; Encouraged the Deobandi maulvi of NWFP to declare Bacha khan and the Khudai Khidmatgar 'sur kaafir' (the Red Kaafir), a flag bearer of godless communism - a reference both to the red uniform and the Soviet Union.
Later, the state need the Deobandi Islam for an altogether different scheme. Deobandi Islam was to be the mainstay of the Jihad enterprise of Zia. A means to secure Strategic Depth on the Western border.
While the Deobandis gained ascendance of the NWFP, thanks to their alliance with the state, the green-turban wearing Barelvi bhai of Punjab felt left out and abandoned. The state looked the other way.
There was however a period where, after Musharraf’s U-turn, after that famous Richard Armitage call where he threatened the Commando of being 'bombed to stone age' (was it?), Mush temporarily considered the soft Islam of Barelvi Punjab for his 'enlightened moderation', but that idea did not culminate into much. Why? Because, the good Talib (who is a Deobandi) was still needed in FATA. So the Barelvi bhai - who was considered for a moment- was abandoned once again.
But the Barelvi Bhai had it enough. The Deobandis had their Samiulhaqs and Sirajuddin Haqqanis. They had Hameed Gul as well.
What the did the Barelvi have? They need a leader. A Man for the Times. A knight on the horseback.
Then, in these dark times of despair and Fitna, rode the Barelvi Mard e Momin on the holy horse of Imaan to lead the soldiers of Allah. The man had no legs. But when Allah is on your side. It does not matter. The man was...

F THE STATE MAN! Who needs the state when you can take the matters in your own hands? To the Barelvis, Asia Bibi, Salman Taseer, blasphemy controversies and the Ahmadis are a godsend. A means to an end.
The Barelvis are here. Islamabad and Pindi are both besieged and there is nothing they can do about. Well, truth be told, the joke is on both Islamabad and Pindi. What the did you expect making the MAZHABI FRANKENSTEIN for short-sighted strategic and security ends?
The Barelvis just called for mutiny in the army and other state apparatus against 'Qadiani loving' 'Maluoon blasphemous' godless heathens in the State. You would think that is treason, punishable by death
Sooner then later the Barelvis and Deobandis, will eventually kill each other as we watch from the sidelines with popcorn.
They hate each other. Consider each other 'biddati' and 'faasiq'. A Barelvi does not pray in a Deobandi Masjid and vice versa. But..
But one thing they both converge over is their own self-preservation.They converge over the opposition to the idea of separation of Masjid and state, the separation of politics & Mimbar. Secularism is an anathema to them. They converge over issues like Mashal, Asia bibi & Taseer.
Mashal, Aasia, Salman Taseer, Junaid Hafeez represent the idea, albeit fictional, of a tolerant and pluralistic state where difference of opinion will not get you lynched to death; where you will be free to believe in what you believe in. In peace.
Dont shoot the messenger but with these maulvis bringing the whole house down,Pakistan is truly ****ed. I mean,what did you expect creating a state on basis of communal frenzy with the aid of dark fringe maulvis of darkness?
