USAID is working with Afghan ministries and global partners to provide access to education for millions of out-of-school children so they have the opportunity to learn to read and build the foundations for their success in school and beyond.
With USAID support, the Afghanistan Independent Bar Association (AIBA) has also established a national network of defense attorneys. AIBA educates law students on the role of defense attorneys and potential career opportunities in the legal profession. One participant in a legal awareness session, Zarifa, a law student at Balkh University said: “A lot of family issues are resolved in the informal traditional justice system, which is difficult to accept. Now, we know that when we face a situation, like forced-marriage, we can seek legal assistance within formal legal justice system.”
AIBA has reached 1,588 female students and citizens through its education activities in Balkh to increase citizens’ awareness of their legal rights and available legal services provided by AIBA and legal aid providers.
These efforts of USAID will ensure that people have full access to their rights and responsibilities.
