  • Afghanistan leader signs new election law

Afghan president Hamid Karzai on Saturday approved a new law regulating next year's presidential and provincial elections. The new legislation was passed by parliament earlier this week. According to the law candidates have to submit nominations for the presidential election on Sept. 16. Last week Karzai signed another law defining the role and structure of the country's electoral watchdog and election commission. The two laws were prompted by an agreement announced by 40 countries in early July to allocate $16 billion in support for Afghanistan if it provides a legal basis for fair elections. Elections in Afghanistan will be held in 2014, the year in which the final withdrawal of all remaining foreign combat forces from the country is slated.
