It is a matter of fact that Rabbani and Masood invited Osama Bin Laden. The reason they did so was to mediate between them and the rising Taliban government.

When the Taliban took control of Kabul, Osama remained there.

    This is the fact.

You can research yourself, and find all the sources. The National Geographic Documentary "Inside the Taliban" mentions this.

It is not up for debate.

Dude, Revolution is correct. Read Michael Scheuer's documentation in great detail on how OBL got to Afghanistan. Also watch Rabbani's post mortem interview (post OBL's demise) on OBL and the amount of praise he showers on him. Why are you so impassioned about denying the fact that multiple groups accomodated him? Its in the written record and historical fact. There is also little evidence for the marriage rumor from what I understand. It doesnt affect your prestige in any way. You gotta understand that all of the people in the world are getting screwed one way or another by political leaders. The rest of the world wants to live simple lives with a small plot of land, a wife, some kids, and peace. These folks with ideologies at the top are pulling people into stupid conflicts. No one is immune.

There is no personal relation between Mullah Omar and Osama Bin Laden. Those were rumors spread by opportunistic journalists like Sarah Shah author of Behind The Veil to make a profit. Osama son had a wedding in Kandahar to Mohammad Atef daughter. That wedding was used to spread these rumors. Osama was invited to Afghanistan directly by Sayaf and Rabbani from Sudan. Rabbani gave the entire network of Al-Qeada, about 600 of them, Afghan visas. The Taliban first came into contact with Osama after taking over Kabul.

The links that Al-Qeada had with Northern Alliance leaders are further exhibited by the assassination of Ahmed Shah Masood at the hands of two Al-Qeada operatives. They were able to get to him very easily while the Taliban tried unsuccessfully for years when though they being their fellow countrymen.

In January 2001, in Kandahar, Atef's daughter married bin Laden's 17-year-old son Mohammed; the wedding guests included Osama's mother, al-Jazeera journalist Ahmad Zaidan, a "few" Taliban party members, and about 400 others. Osama recited poetry about the USS Cole bombing, but was upset with his delivery and tried having Zaidan re-record the section before deciding he preferred the earlier version.[14][30]

That year, Mullah Omar is said to have argued that Bin Laden should not draw further reprisals against Afghanistan by striking the United States again. This led to a schism among al-Qaeda leadership, where Atef sided with Bin Laden, while leaders like Saif al Adel sided with Omar.[31]

My understanding is that Osama kept the Taliban and Mullah Omar in the dark to the extent that they were taken advantage of. I think they had no idea of Sep.11 attacks. The assassination of Ahmed Shah Masood was to win favor with the Taliban prior to what was coming i.e. invasion of Afghanistan at the hands of the Americans.
