ISLAMABAD, January 11, 2012 (Frontier Star)
Afghan National Security Advisor and former Foreign Minister Dr. Rangeen Dadfur Spanta's secret visit to India has caused anger in the presidency of Afghanistan, a diplomatic source said Tuesday.
A western diplomat who recently served in Kabul informed that Spanta had recently visited New Delhi without permission of Afghan President Hamid Karzai. The diplomat who was insisting on not revealing his name because of the sensitivity of his job said that Karzai is even considering the option to remove Spanta from his office but he is not taking action due to some compulsions. "Spanta has made strong himself in Kabul by forming a group within Karzai administration including the foreign ministry," well-placed sources said.
Karzai came to know only when some quarter expressed their concerns over the visit and meetings of the National Security Advisor, the sources added. Several officials in Kabul have also objections over increasing contacts of the Afghan warlords with the Indian Army. "Karzai and several of his fellows are even worry over the warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum recent meeting with Indian army chief and contacts of several other leaders of the former Northern Alliance," diplomatic sources informed.
The sources said that India has started influencing and supporting former leaders of the Northern Alliance, who are now openly opposing talks with Taliban. Dostum in Berlin conference in Germany has strongly opposed talks with Taliban saying that they are not reliable and US is mistaking.
The governor of northern Balkh province, Atta Mohammad Noor, has also objected any negotiations with the Afghan Taliban. On the sidelines of the second Bonn conference, the US, Germany and Qatar agreed to set up a Taliban office in Qatar, a move supported by the Afghan government and welcomed by the fighters.
The sources said that several members of Karzai administration including the president himself consider such activities by certain Afghan leaders as counterproductive to peace in the region. Sources confided to that Pakistani officials who are aware of the recent development and mysterious visit of Spanta to India have expressed its reservations, and also conveyed to Afghan officials informally.
Some diplomatic sources also blamed India of arming the alliance. Karzai considers that peace in Afghanistan is not possible if all the stake holders including the neighbouring countries especially Pakistan was not taken into confidence, a Senior Afghan Official on condition of anonymity said in a telephonic conversation. However, the diplomatic sources asserted that leaders like Spanta have become so strong that their lobbies have encircled the president and in some cases he remains helpless.
Pakistan has been supporting a solution to Afghan problem through political mean and consider talks among opponent groups as essential to peace.
