Local Afghan council shuts over US raid
    Mon Dec 19, 2011 9:41AM GMT

The provincial council of Afghanistan's southeastern Paktia Province has shut down its offices to protest a deadly night raid by US-led forces that killed a pregnant woman, Press TV reports.

Provincial officials say the office will remain closed until the perpetrators of the attack are arrested and brought to justice.

Tribal leaders have also threatened to call for a massive demonstration if those responsible are not handed over to the judicial system.

The protest rallies came after the US-led foreign forces attacked a house in Gardez district of Paktia province on Saturday, killing the pregnant woman and injuring four others.

The director of the Paktia Province Counter-Narcotics Department, Hasibullah Ahmadzai, and his two sons were also arrested during the US-led raid.

Afghan authorities have condemned the deadly night assault and launched an investigation into the incident.

The night raid came despite President Hamid Karzai's repeated calls for foreign forces to halt such operations.

Civilian casualties caused by US-led foreign forces have triggered deep anger among Afghans, prompting violent demonstrations throughout the country.

The United States invaded Afghanistan in 2001 under the pretext of eradicating the Taliban militants, leaving countless civilians dead or injured.

The security situation remains fragile in Afghanistan despite the presence of nearly 150,000 US-led foreign forces.
