WASHINGTON, May 17 (UPI) -- U.S. representatives are involved in talks with top Taliban officials to accelerate a plan to start stepping away from the war, officials say.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in the wake of the killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden that there was little chance the Taliban could "wait us out" in Afghanistan.
"But you can make the choice to abandon al-Qaida and participate in a peaceful political process," she said.
The United Nations is reviewing its terrorism blacklist represented by U.N. Security Council Resolution 1267 with the aim of facilitating Taliban involvement in the Afghan political process.
Afghan officials were quoted by The Washington Post as saying U.S. officials have attended meetings in Qatar and Germany that involved a Taliban official with close ties to reclusive leader Mohammad Omar.
The Post claims Washington moved to accelerate direct talks with the Taliban "several months ago." U.S. President Barack Obama is expected to announce revisions to the Afghan war plan in July. Those plans could include a graduated withdrawal.
Kabul complains officially that U.S. talks with the Taliban undercut Afghan democracy though U.S. officials were quoted by the Post as saying Afghan officials were "fully briefed" on the matter.
