  • Five Killed in Pakistan

Explosions in violence-hit Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi have left at least five people dead and several others wounded.

The explosion took place in the Layari area of Karachi on Friday night.
Sources say an unknown person hurled hand grenades into the crowd gathering at an outdoor gambling den.

Some of the seriously injured were transferred to nearby hospitals.
Karachi is home to numerous ethnic groups and was wracked by clashes between rival ethnic and political factions for much of the 1990s.
Ethnic and sectarian unrest have claimed the lives of hundreds of people in Karachi over the past years.

Militant attacks and political unrest have claimed the lives of over 4,000 people throughout Pakistan since 2007.

In a separate development, unknown militants have killed at least eight Shia Muslims in Pakistan's southwestern province of Balochistan.
The militants opened fire on the victims on a soccer pitch in the Hazara town of Quetta. At least 10 more people were injured in the attack.
Meanwhile, Pakistani security forces foiled a terror plot and killed bombers in Derra Ismail Khan town in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Officials told Press TV that police opened fire on a suspicious vehicle after its driver failed to stop despite police warnings. Seconds after the firing, the driver detonated the explosives.
