Afghan vehicles with trade goods would be able to move into 90 countries of the world after eight months, the transport and aviation minister said on Monday. Speaking at a ceremony marking the National Transit Day in Kabul, Duad Ali Najafi said an agreement had been singed with the International Road Transport Union. The pact would allow Afghan vehicles to transport trade goods to 90 countries to the union's member states under the TIR (Transport International Routier) system after eight months.
He said the TIR number plates would be affixed to vehicles carrying goods. He added vehicles would reach their destinations without any interference, check or paying duties.
Najafi said efforts be made during the next eight months to bring Afghanistan's transport system at par with international standards to pave the way for the country's accession to the IRU system.
The minister said his ministry would be responsible for IRU system affairs in the country and vehicles of companies matching international standards would be given the TIR number plates.
He said Afghanistan's entry into the IRU would illustrate the desire of the world's poorest country to participate actively in international commerce. "It will be a great achievement for bringing a revolution in the country's economy," he remarked.
