  • Wood delivery begins again in Kunar

The delivery process of thousands of square feet of cut wood has begun in Kunar with giving a specific amount of tax based on presidential decree and decision of ministers' council.

According to officials, more than 10,000 million square feet cut wood were kept in this province because government didn't permit traders to deliver them. Kunar Governor, Sayed Fazlullah Wahidi, said the woods are transferred to other provinces inside the country by paying a specific amount tax under close monitoring of a commission. He added people promised that they will not cut woods in forests of Kunar anymore.

"These woods were cut then registered. Owner Traders can deliver them to other provinces by paying an amount of tax but people promised that they will not cut the new trees in the forests." Mr. Wahidi added the woods will not be delivered outside the country and traders will pay AFG300 for one square feet of wood. "According to the decree, the woods will not be exported to other countries but they will be used inside the country."
Residents of Kunar are concerned that the delivery of these woods will encourage people to cut more trees in the forests. "My name is Noorullah, resident of Kunar province. The cut woods should be delivered from here because they are getting old.

Some days ago, there was fire and the cut woods were in danger of burning. People invested their fund on these woods so it is good to be delivered."

"Cutting forests is a great damage and misery for a country and it is a crime." Thirty decades of war also damaged forests in the country and provided opportunity for smugglers to cut trees in the forests. A lot of cut woods were smuggled to other countries but for the first time the cut woods were delivered legally.
