| in Nangarhar JALALABAD (PAN): Nearly 641 houses have been destroyed and 900 acres of cropped land washed away by floods over the past three days in the eastern province of Nangarhar, officials said on Tuesday. The rain-induced floods killed livestock besides damaging dozens of reconstruction projects in Hesarak, Khogyani and Chaparhar districts, the governor's spokesman said. Ahmad Zia Abdulzai told Pajhwok Afghan News up to 435 houses, 750 acres of land, 35 kilometres of water channels and 20 water heads were destroyed and 200 animals killed in Sarando, Nawar and Lagigar villages of Hesarak. More than 150 acres of land and 206 houses were destroyed in Khogyani and Chaparhar districts, he said. Governor Gul Agha Sherzai has appointed a delegation to survey the area for assistance to victims. But a spokesman for the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA), Shukrullah Ihsas, said they could not help the affected farmer under the relevant rules. But Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Director Mohammad Husain Safi said they had appointed district extension mangers to assess the scale of damage. Spades, pickaxes and handcarts would be distributed to affected growers. Floods destroy 641 houses in Nangarhar | Pajhwok Afghan News To advise others is an easy matter, the difficulty is accepting advice -- since it is bitter for those who follow their own inclinations and desires. -Imam al Ghazali |
