Taliban claim to shoot down NATO helicopter in eastern Afghanistan

Tue Nov 26, 2013 1:18PM

Taliban militants claim their fighters have shot down a helicopter belonging to the US-led forces in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Nangarhar.

According to the militants, five foreign troops and seven Afghan army soldiers were killed in the attack which happened in the Shahrzad district.

They say the helicopter was involved in a bombing campaign in which at least eight Afghan civilians lost their lives.

Neither the NATO nor the Afghan national army has made any statement on the report.

Taliban militants have increased violence against US-led forces in Afghanistan, targeting NATO helicopters and drones.

This is while the Taliban claim their militants have shot down several aircraft and NATO choppers in different parts of Afghanistan over the past few months.

The militant group has focused their battle against US-led forces in Afghanistan on the country's volatile southern and eastern provinces.

This comes as there has been no letup in the Taliban attacks on US-led foreign troops across Afghanistan with US-led troops and Afghan forces falling prey to Taliban attacks on an almost daily basis.

In late April, the Taliban announced the start of their annual offensive against US-led and Afghan forces, vowing a new wave of attacks across Afghanistan.

The militant group said it would use "every possible tactic" to inflict casualties on Afghan and US-led forces, specifically mentioning insider and bomb attacks.

The rising death toll of US-led foreign forces in Afghanistan has also prompted growing opposition to the Afghan war in NATO member states and other countries that have contributed troops to the military occupation.

The US and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but the country is still gripped by insecurity.
