kerala, as a state is fantastic. i agree with tor_khan there. very beautiful and laid back compared to some other states.
i was there for a few months in 2006 and back for a couple of weeks in 2008. easy going, minor hassles. only saw about 4 beggars in all that time. i could walk around my favourite town there and no-one bothered me. the occassional invite to someones home for a cuppa.
manali in the north, in the himalayas is beautiful but probably very touristy these days.
contact me for more info about kerala if are serious about going there. try some kerala food, like masala dosai if you can. i didn't like the south indian cuisine and that was a problem.

Spot on Face. There's a marked difference between regional cuisine. Perhaps the taste for South Indian food is something that develops over time.

but one good thing i can say about india,you can rent a whole building and it is not expensive .

more than 5million tourist went to india in 2010. india is not known for kidnapping or murder of tourists, scaremonger
