Pakistan chose to bat v India
Seeking their first win over India an a World Cup match, be it the 50-over or 20-over variety, Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat first. This was the first time Pakistan have batted first in a Twenty20 international against India. They had added incentive going into the match: a win here ensures them a place in the semi-finals, and knocks rivals India out. They went in with the same XI that beat South Africa two days ago.

Virender Sehwag came back to bring the number of specialist bowlers down to four, but India pulled off a mini surprise by dropping Harbhajan Singh for a third seamer, L Balaji. Yuvraj Singh, whose fitness has been questioned by former India players of late, and Rohit Sharma were persisted with. Pakistan
