Pakistan, who last played serious competitive cricket more than two months ago, ran through Sri Lanka, many of whose players - in theory, at least - should have been in T20 groove after having played a lot of IPL. The IPL challenge, though, doesn't involve anything remotely close to the quality of the Pakistan bowling. It took the best eighth-wicket partnership in T20 international cricket, 43 between Thisara Perera and Nuwan Kulasekara, to give Sri Lanka a fighting chance.
Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul are the leading wicket-takers in T20Is, and Saeed Ajmal's variations become even more dangerous when the batsman is under pressure to score quick runs. Given such resources, you really don't want Sohail Tanvir to be on song if you are the batting side. Unfortunately for Sri Lanka, that's what happened. In his first three overs, Tanvir removed Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara.
None of the dismissals, though, featured any big contribution from the bowler, except that he ran up and delivered without overstepping. That's not Tanvir's fault, though. That's the nature of the game, where the wickets are cheaper than they ever were. On another day all three could have gone for boundaries, and the bowler would have had just as much to do with it.
Jayawardene got a leading edge before judging the pace of the pitch, Dilshan picked out fine leg, and Sangakkara dragged a full and wide delivery on. Sri Lanka 31 for 3 after batting first, and Tanvir 3 for 9. The remaining batsmen struggled to find balance between rebuilding and keeping the rate up. Both Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews survived run-out chances before getting bowled to wild slogs. Chandimal gave Mohammad Sami a wicket on his return to international cricket, and Ajmal accounted for Mathews.
Two debutants came together for what could yet be a crucial moment, as the 33-year-old wicketkeeper Shakeel Ansar missed a chance to stump Lahiru Thirimanne. The batsman proceeded to add 22 to his eight then. Ansar made a comeback, though, when he broke 24-run partnership between Thirimanne and another debutant Kaushal Lokuarachchi with a direct flick. Thirimanne followed it up with a reverse-sweep straight down short third man's throat. At 89 for 7 in the 17th over, Sri Lanka threatened to not even bat out their allocation.
Perera and Kulasekara, though, rescued the innings. Perera scored a two-a-ball 32, including a six and a couple off the last two balls of the innings, to keep the contest alive.
Bismillah, alhamdulillah, all praises due to Allah and may Allah increase the honor of Prophet Muhammad and protect our nation from any harm.
