Herat is much more advanced and clean now.

It has 24 hours electricity, High speed internet and a lot more. I seen the recent pictures.

These pictures have an air of enchantment about them..They might lack in technology but they are so rich in culture..I'm one of those odd balls who likes old things and who thinks places like Dubai are true corporate abominations

Well this village as you put it was among the biggest artistic centre's in the world..As Luke Powell, the man who took these pictures puts it

In 1428 Herat was one of the most important artistic centers in the world. At that time the city had a population at least five times that of London or Paris, and was the capitol of an empire that stretched from Iraq to China. Herat had famous colleges, libraries, public baths, monumental architecture, and painters like Bihzad, whose styles were followed by Mogul and Persian artists for centuries

these streets could be easily peshawar circa 1970's, the resemblence is uncanny, I bet it all looked the same back then.

A city of beauty, culture, heritage, "Adab" attiquete...

Where can i begin? Heratis are the most "baa adab" and "baa akhlaq" people you will ever meet.

They are very cultured and very polite people. My best friend is herati and throughout my life i have had tremendous opportunity to meet many heratis and none of them have disappointed me...

I agree with you! I remember the first time I went to Dubai, it was a scheduled meeting place but I really didn't want to meet there. I am old-fashion in this way, I prefer rural to city, and if has to be city, then city with history.

The more frustrating thing after arriving in Dubai was that the other person meeting me couldn't get a visa, so I was alone in a city I didn't want to come to in the first place. The first day I was really frustrated, but the second day I set off to at least discover, as long as I was there I had to make it count for something.

Did you guys know Herat once used to make about 60% of Afghanistan's national income? And that was the reason why Herat has always been the biggest fear of Afghans, fear of losing it. And indeed the people are very polite and very friendly, too bad because of bad road surface I couldn't visit it last summer.
