Mazar-e-Sharif, capital of Balkh which is said to be most prosperous province after Herat. Nawrooz (Afghan, Iranian and Tajiki new year) is said to be celebrated with most enthusiasm in this very place. Ziyarat of Hazrat Ali is said to be in this mosque.

No this is not true, Hazrat Ali (ra) was buried in Najaf and this is just a rumour

Some of the Afghan shias claim Hazrat Ali (ra) is buried in Mazar Sharif but they cannot back this up...majority view is that he is buried in Najaf

^ there is difference of opinion of whether it is Ali RA grave or not, because while some claim it is others say its not. Some argue that they kept the burial site of Ali RA hidden so that his enemies could not damage it, so they mentioned najaf and then they had buried him in balkh, from what i remember it was this, but may Allah forgive me if mentioned it wrong

Hazrat Ali instructed that his burial place should remain secret. According to legend the dead body of Hazrat Ali was placed on a camel which was driven from Kufa. The camel stopped a few miles west of Kufa, and here the dead body of Hazrat Ali was buried secretly. No tomb was raised and nobody knew of the burial place except a few trusted persons It is narrated that more than a hundred years later, the Abbasid Caliph, Harun-ur-Rashid went deer-hunting outside Kufa, and the deer sought sanctuary at a place where the hounds would not pursue it. On enquiry as to why the place was a sanctuary, Harun-ur-Rashid was told that it was the burial place of Hazrat Ali r.a. Harun-ur-Rashid ordered a mausoleum to be built on the spot. In due course the town of Najaf grew round the mausoleum.

So it seems he was being buried secretly, but not taken so far away towards Balkh because he could be buried secretly somewhere nearby...why thousand of miles away?

Well it doesn't make sense to secretly bury Ali (ra) in Balkh which is so far away....He got buried in Najaf, which is away from Kufa...thats where he was secretly buried

^ Allah knows, but if that isnt him, then who is it?

Like Saif wror said, maybe because Hazrat Ali had visited that place and people used to admire him a lot in Balkh, this 'ziyarat' could have been build in his name. I am not too sure, difference sources claim different things.

Many people believe that's where Hazrat Ali is burried, but we've heard that Zardosht is buried there in reality. Who knows!

Shayesta, very nice pictures, but this first picture of Faryab brought tears to my eyes from emotions, because nature is showing its beauty at full swing. Nature is at peak, Allah-o-jameel, wa yuhibbuljamal, Allah is beautiful and loves beauty.

It remind me the Petrin top at Prague where is a beautiful rose garden where one can see and feel Allah from very close. But this is Faryab picture, He came much closer, but needs the seeing eyes.

The pictures are from either somewhere in Kabul province or it could be around the city of Maimana in the Northwest.

It indeed looks like Maimana, so it could be Faryab. Though I got pictures of Samangan here which looks quiet similar. But thanks a lot for sharing, those were absolutely beautiful. Looking forward for more.
