PESHAWAR: To overcome growing energy crisis and enhance hydel power generation as well as oil and gas exploration, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has allocated Rs699 million for 16 projects.
The province has several ideal locations for generation of hydroelectricity and the estimated potential of hydropower generation in the province is about 29,600 megawatts, which is about 70 per cent of the total hydel power generation capacity of the country, i.e. 41,700 megawatt.
Presently 3,945-megawatt electricity is being generated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from Tarbela, Warsak, Dargai, Jaban, Malakand-III, Chitral, and Kurram Garhi power stations.
Last year, SHYDO completed three hydropower projects in Malakand, Swabi and Chitral districts. The total capacity of these hydropower projects was 101 megawatt. These projects are not only contributing to the reduction in loadshedding but will also generate revenue for the province. This year Malakand-III power project is expected to generate revenue of Rs842 million.
Meanwhile, the government of Pakistan has signed a loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the development of hydropower potential in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at a cost of Rs4.777 billion. Under this project, SHYDO will construct three new projects having a total installed capacity of 50 megawatts. The projects are at various stages of implementation and will be completed during the next four years.
Under the same loan, the SHYDO has also conducted feasibility studies of three projects at Koto in Dir Lower district and Karora, Shangla and Jabori in Mansehra, which are nearing completion. The total installed capacity of the three hydropower projects is 34 megawatts. Construction work on these projects will start during 2010-11 and will be completed in the next four years. The SHYDO has also awarded 10 raw sites of 5-50 megawatts located in various districts of the province to private sector for development. The cost of these studies is estimated to be Rs98.94 million.
On the directives of the chief minister, the SHYDO has prepared and approved the action plan 2010-2025 for construction of seven projects.
