View Full Version : what i want in a sandwich.. DaZahroJaam.. 11-16-2011, 12:38 PM I want non whole wheat bread and some sort of cheese on it. Any sort of cheese, as long as its not swiss.. You know, the ones with holes in the them. They don't taste that good. I want olives, pickles and three cucumber slices in it as well as lots three banana pepper pieces and two pieces of jalapeo peppers in it. I want three strands of cilantro leaves in it as well as two stripes of hot sauce on top.
I wouldnt mind onions but I would definitely not have a sandwich that has green pepper in it.
Thank you. :smile1: al-arab 11-16-2011, 12:59 PM Here you have an Iraqi Shawarma sandwich.

No it is Middle Eastern, popular in nearly all Arab countries.
Most of the Arab cuisine originates in Iraqi cuisine which is the oldest in the world.
I posted these pictures about the Iraqi cuisine in the Iraq thread I made.
Some history first:
Iraqi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq) cuisine or Mesopotamian cuisine has a long history going back some 10,000 years - to the Sumerians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sumer), Babylonians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylonia) and Assyrians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assyria).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraqi_cuisine#cite_note-Salloum-0) Tablets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clay_tablet) found in ancient ruins in Iraq show recipes prepared in the temples during religious festivals - the first cookbooks in the world.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraqi_cuisine#cite_note-Salloum-0) Ancient Iraq (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Iraq), or Mesopotamia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesopotamia), was home to many sophisticated and highly advanced civilizations, in all fields of knowledge - including the culinary arts.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraqi_cuisine#cite_note-Salloum-0) However, it was in the medieval era (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_Golden_Age) when Baghdad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baghdad) was the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbasid_Caliphate) that the Iraqi kitchen reached its zenith.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraqi_cuisine#cite_note-Salloum-0) Today, the cuisine of Iraq reflects this rich inheritance as well as strong influences from the culinary traditions of neighbouring Turkey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkey), Iran (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran) and the Greater Syria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Syria) area.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraqi_cuisine#cite_note-Salloum-0)

I agree. The cheese must be natural. But I prefer Arab yoghurts and sauces in my Falafels and Shawarmas as well as natural cheese. I do not know what it is called in English. Insaaf_انصاف 11-16-2011, 01:25 PM A Doner or Mac chiken lol Afghanistan2010 11-16-2011, 01:25 PM Maqluba

In London, its for 3 quids from where I buy. DaZahroJaam.. 11-16-2011, 01:54 PM I don't like shawarmas. No offense to anyone but they are really greasy and messy at the same time. You can't have it twice in a week without feeling as if you are forcing yourself to eat it. Or maybe I feel that way because I had one for 9 months everyday for lunch because that was the only halal food I could find in the area where I worked.
Can we not talk about things other than sandwiches in here?? al-arab 11-16-2011, 01:56 PM That is good Afghanistan2000. I am sure you have more dishes that resembles our Arabic ones.
About fish sandwiches. Nobody has probably heard about this here but my favourite fish Shawarma/Falafel/Sandwich is the one with Masgouf (very famous Iraqi dish)

You need to try the authentic ones in the Middle East. Western made and authentic local can not be compared. There are 100 different Shawarmas and Falafels in Iraq and most other Arab countries. Here you can see more of the Masgouf dish. It is very unique and tasty from Babylonian times.
You do not need to go to Iraq to try it. It can found in whole Middle East and Arab world. I do not live in Iraq myself but in the Gulf. Here is a description of Iraqi Biryani:
Al Biryani is one of many famous dishes from the traditional Iraqi kitchen.[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biryani#cite_note-7) It is widespread in Iraq as well as many other middle eastern countries. It is also very popular and considered a staple cuisine throughout the Kurdish territories (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurdish_cuisine).[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biryani#cite_note-8) Different variations of biryani can be found in the different regions of Iraq. It is believed that the cooking style of "Dum" or "cooking in steam" style of cooking has its origins in Arabia.[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biryani#cite_note-9) Typically with Iraqi biryani the rice is usually saffron based with either lamb or chicken being the meat or poultry of choice. Iraqi biryani is usually quite mild in terms of its spicyness when compared to its south-east Asian variants. Some variations include vermicelli or mixed nuts and raisins spread liberally over the rice.[11] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biryani#cite_note-10)[12] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biryani#cite_note-11)[13] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biryani#cite_note-12)[14] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biryani#cite_note-13)[15] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biryani#cite_note-14)[16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biryani#cite_note-15)[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biryani#cite_note-16)[18] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biryani#cite_note-17) Haris 11-16-2011, 07:04 PM Here you have an Iraqi Shawarma sandwich.
