I will be transferring to another school for fall of 11'....the school is located in Los Angeles which is an 8 hour drive for us. That is where i will get my bachelors in Biological Science. My parents have allowed me to go because both my parents gone through leaving home and living in dorms. But there is a condition.

The thing is, my father thinks its better for me to get engaged or married since i will be out of the house and on my own, i dont know if i can agree with that. What do you think? lets have a discussion on that. I would like to hear other people's opinions on this matter. I would appreciate helpful comments and possibly personal experiences if you have any :)

WoW, thats like out of the blue.

Dorms, that too in the west and to top it all, in L.A. . Man, that is like the complete opposite of where an Afghan gal is brought up to be.

I know from experience, I have seen things being done there that well, no Pukhtun man can ever have the tongue to say. :tongue: > :devil:.

Still, engagement is what my parents would advise me to do in similar situations if I was a girl.

My advice:
1) Engagement is a +/-. You may or may not choose to do so.
2) Staying out of the focus of dorm girls is a priority.
3) Try acting like an outcast :tongue: thats the safest way to study and be safe in dorms.

I mean i understand where my father is coming from. While my mom left for medical school, she was engaged to my father. I mean its not only a dorm.....its being on your own. I will live in a dorm for one year, then on my own after that. You know how our families are when a girl is all by herself, in a foreign area hundreds of miles away from home. Its understandable. When i transfer, i will work in the labs and hospitals. I will establish a life there for how long it takes. My family encourages high education for women, but if it means for you to be leaving home and independent, then the family chooses to have her engagement, will only if she wishes to do so.
