Hey American/UK born/adapted Pashtuns, do you want to a form a third grouping? It appears that no one understands us, everyone tells us that we are either too Americanized, overly fundementalist, more academic than practical, or unrealistic/idealistic, or that we do not belong. We are truly the In Betweeners or, if you prefer an SE Hinton type lingo, The Outsiders. I realize here that both sides back home are not progressive and cannot unify the way we can. We can build our own Pashtunkhwa here and call it the United Pashtuns of America. We can basically be the improvement that America was on old Europe, or in our case the American Pashtuns are over old Pashtunkhwa (joking :tongue:).

During that engineering design project period one sees in the 4th year, I lived in DC and also spent some time in NYC when I was with another engineering firm. However, in my heart of hearts I get agoraphobic due to my having been raised in a small township in a southern state that generally has side swathes of open land and few people so heavily congregated. I also was schooled in the south and medically educated in the midwest with so much noise pollution. So my heart tends towards wide open plains and lots of land. My wife also hails from a state that is sparsely populated and where outdoorsmenship sort of is the main activity people have to do unless they travel a few hours into the capital city. In our little spare time, we go shooting, hunting, fishing, when we get the chance. In the past 2 years I have been here, I have been to NYC twice; once for visiting a colleague that I used to work with and the second time for a medical conference in Columbia/Presbyterian. I guess the best way to explain it is that it is sort of the way that rural Kandaharyaan view venturing into Kabul...

Place that I want to venture out to are in Maine as they sort of more closely resemble my environs.

Oh come on now, Bohemian Rhapsody is overplayed but a masterpiece. And once again, I mean what about other Rock stuff like "All of My Love" by Led Zeppelin... that stuff makes rap look like child's play. "Hey Jude" by Paul McCartney makes Eminem (who I appreciate for "Mosh" and some of his protest work) appear like a kid with crayons. Its interesting to hear you play... I played a black Yamaha FG myself and owned a steel guitar and have stuck to acoustic for years (I also have not had the chance to really play for years). I used to want to buy a Fender electric, but decided my money could be better spent elsewhere. I learnt on Rockabilly growing up including Old Elvis stuff, Gene Vincent, John Lennon, etc.

But I think country is true, unadulterated, and unfettered by electronica and thus remains the last bastion of authenticity.

I'll be an honourary American Pashtoon, but as an ex-Minnesotan, I don't have a Southern twang.

Actually, I was born and lived almost all my life in the Queen's country and so have a decidedly crisp middle-class British accent. When I lived in the midwest they were so unused to English people (unlike the coastal/tourist points) and sure, I used my accent to my advantage in small town America - worked a treat for something quite mundane, like walking into a furniture store or when I asked for a sandwich.

Speaking on my own behalf, I like all sorts of music and art as long as it has something meaningful behind it. I even like some hip hop.

But I've never taken to the rap/urban/ghetto culture nor do I relate to it. I think that subculture only thrives because that's what's trendy; I don't think people really relate to it (how can the average Muslim/Pakhtoon someone relate to Nas?); they only follow it because it's popular so it's a way of looking for acceptance from the mainstream outside culture.

theres a lot of hip hop i listen to which is not main stream (the coup, paris,) but the only mainstream person i listen to these days is ice cube. his album the predator was a classic.

you are right, brother. other forums are infested with hate and conflict but most members here are on the same page and are respectful to one another. i just visited that tajikam forums which was hilarious, the top member was saying how tajiks should massacre pashtun families, of course i joined and rebutted but then got banned lol. not that i have anything against tajiks, as i am half tajik myself. are you mohmand? my family goes back to kunar before they settled in ghazni a few generations ago.

I fully concur on the techno and find it to be purely noise pollution. You are definitly an honorary citizen for sure now as U2 is a solid rock band. Moreover, the fact that you agree with me on rap and hip hop certainly shows you might very well be the only one that can educate our New York/Northeast/Fremont "gangsters" on the utter lack of virtue in rap/hip-hop.

i believe the most intellectual music today is underground hip hop and rap, people like Jedi Mind Tricks, Immortal Technique, Lowkey etc listening to some Rap and Hip Hop can be very enlightning and not a waste of time unlike some mombo jumbo sang over a chorus 20 times for 6 minutes from most music genres.
