  • The myth of Punjabis Pashtuns enemity and blame game of Pashtuns Part I

Pashtuns generally blame each and everything on few other entities like Pakistani army, ISI , Punjab and Punjabis etc. We feel satisfied that we put the blame on Punjabis and our work is done. In this article I would like to have a threadbare analysis of this trend of Pashtuns to blame others specially Punjabis for all the problems of Pashtuns.

For me Punjab is a land, a province of Pakistan and India and all the people living there are Punjabis who may speak different languages as Seraiki, Hindko, Potohari, Gujri, and even Pashto. Punjabi is not a race or ethnic group like Pashtuns. Even a Pashtun who lives in the province of Punjab is a Punjabi because he is living there but by race or language or ethnicity he or she is Pashtun. Using Punjabi as a race for people is a misnomer which must be rectified. Punjab is land of five rivers derived from Panj means five and Ab which means water.

Punjabi as a language is a very weak language; it’s very similar to Urdu and has never been a medium of instruction or a court language. It does not have any strong literature as compared to Pashto. Pashto has a rich literature and is the official language of a country Afghanistan. There is no any such culture as Punjabi; it can be Indian, Hindu or Sikh but not Punjabi as such. There is no Punjabi nationalism like Pashtun nationalism. There is no Punjabi movement for promulgation of any Punjabi culture on Pashtuns even the Punjabis themselves are leaving their language and culture and all these educated Punjabis now mostly speak Urdu and not Panjabi.

Keeping all this in view I don’t understand why we Pashtuns are so much afraid of Punjab and Punjabis and blaming them for all our faults and problems. I see in a remote Pashtun village when they write Urdu or Dari on their sign boards, who are that Panjabi who is telling him not to write Pashto instead.

The basic purpose of this article is that we may not blame Punjabis for our problems, Punjabis are culturally weak people and are generally not nationalists .Rarely they organize events like Alamami Panjabi conference but it’s the right of any people to have such conferences.

Some Pashtun circles think that Punjabis are very clever people. I agree that they are concerned with their commercial and agricultural activities. This way they are intelligent, not like Pashtuns who instead of business and other useful activities are involved in religious extremism and terrorism .Majority of Punjabis live in rural areas .They are simple and innocent people . As they are in majority in number, about 49 % in Pakistan , that is why they may seem to be oppressors , and some of them may be really oppressors, but instead of blaming them we Pashtuns should make ourselves strong enough not to let Punjabis to grab our rights

Pashtuns should be involved in more productive and educational activities instead of tribal wars and terrorism and smuggling etc .Lets forget Punjabis as cause of our problems , lets make ourselves strong by education, commerce, agriculture, culture , sports, media etc

I want to generate useful, intellectual discussion on few myths that we are living with them for the last many centuries, much have been written and spoken on the other side of what I write like Punjabis being enemies of Pashtuns, Tajiks being our enemies etc

Look at the history of Pakistan, has there being any important Panjabi president or prime minister , no ,the same in Afghanistan, all presidents/kings were Pashtuns(for Tajiks and Pashtuns. I am writing a new article) in Pakistan, Muhamamd Ali Jinah, Liaqat Ali Khan, Ayub khan, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto, Musharaf, Asif Ali Zardari , etc all are non Punjabis, even Nawaz Sharif is a Kashmiri, not pure Panjabi. The present prime minister Gilani is Seraiki, not pure Panjabi. What I want to prove is that the ones who remained at the helm of affairs in Pakistan were non Punjabis.

Then Punjabis in Pakistan are not that much nationalists as Pashtuns, Sindhis, Baluchs. They being a race are a very weak group, there are many races and castes, even they are not a nation or one race, and the people in the area of Punjab are Punjabis, not like Pashtuns who are one race, one blood, one genealogy. Punjabis speak many languages, have many religions, many races, many castes, different cultures, there is not a single political known party on the name of Punjabis as Pashtunkhwah Mili awami Party etc,

The killers in Pashtuns areas are government people , not Punjabis as a race who are coming to Pashtunkhwah to kill Pashtuns, being their enemies as in a genocide, We don’t have any Panjabi movement against Pashtuns, Pashtuns are being killed because of their own faults, because of international politics and because of state policies not because of any Panjabi adverse movement against Pashtuns

Pashtuns may understand this harsh reality. Instead of blaming Punjabis, we must concentrate on our pitfalls, lets think creatively, not on these traditional lines that our misfortunes are because of Punjabis or others, lets think differently now. My approach will seem bizarre to many but if you think with a impartial objective mind you may find some truth in what I request here

We may not compare the case of former East Pakistan now Bangladesh. First because it was a wrong decision to make Bangladesh part of Pakistan being 1000 miles away and India an enemy in between, second, Bangladesh being a different culture and language totally different, third it was because of the non Punjabis Ayub khan and Bhutto that they started separating . That was a problem between the two wings, East and West, not between Punjabis and Bengalis two opponent races , it was not a racial genocide , it was a political phenomenon.

Another resembling case is the name Hindu. Hindu is again not a race or nation, the people living near the river Indus are Hindus, whether they speak Hindi or not, there are thousands of languages in India, thousands of races and many religions all are not Hindus . Another connotation of being Hindu is religiously Hindu, but again Hinduism is not purely a religion .Its a social order. People can take name from the area where they live but this does not make them a race. It will have a name like Punjabis, living in the area of Punjab but racially they are either Gujars, Rajpoots, Chudris, Sardars, Jats, even Baluchs, Pashtuns etc

One person can have many identities, being a human being, then living in the area of Punjab, Panjabi, by race Pashtun, by religion Muslim, by political nationality Pakistani, by profession teacher, by blood relation son or father, etc

My point is Pashtuns are superior to Punjabis being one race , one language, one blood not like Punjabis who are a diverse group of races and people and religions Pashtuns should not afraid of Punjabis. Punjabis can’t do anything against Pashtuns. Pashtuns are enemies of their own selves, not the other way round that Punjabis being a race or people are their enemies.

One might know that the sociological or political terms like NATION, RACE, PEOPLE, TRIBE, EVEN RELIGION etc are very difficult to be defined. There are various aspects of these definitions and various approaches and opinions. I will not get stuck in these intricacies, and I agree that Panjabi has its own identity but this identity is not that strong as that of Pashtuns

What I want to prove here is that Punjabis as a race or social order or tribe, or cultural group, or as a nation are not enemies of Pashtuns. They are not bent upon destroying Pashtuns , it can be a policy which can be Panjabi or non Panjabi origin but Panjabi whatever you call them nation or race , are not as such enemies of Pashtuns , its just a myth making Punjabis as a nation or race responsible for Pashtun misfortunes. We should not show supremacy or difference of races as it will be racism, the same I will try to use in my favor that we as a race may not blame the whole Panjabi people as enemies of Pashtuns, it is generalizing things.

Punjab or any other entity cant rule, can’t subdue Pashtuns if Pashtuns in Pakistan are strong enough to counter any effort of subjugation by others. If we have the right leaders, nationalist parties rule Northern and Southern Pashtunkhwah, Tribal areas are merged with a united Pashtunkhwah province with full autonomy then all this sense of deprivation and inferiority complex of blaming others specially Punjabis will be vanished.

This essay is a malicious attempt at deception and seems to be intended to propqagate fallacies and confusion in the minds of Pashtuns. The myth of the non-existance of Punjabis as a nation is the handi-work of those who are at the payroll of the non-governmental organizations of the Punjab Raj and its purpose is to disguise the political/economic exploitation of the other nations by Punjabis.

The author of this article should be ashamed of spreading such lies. Any Baluch, Pashtun, Sindhi, Punjabi, Bangali, and even Mahajar nationlist leader or intellecual and he/she will tell you how profoundly has the expansion and strengthening of the Punjabi nationalism since the last century affected evey other nation in the region.

The author of the article is so shameless in spreading this pro-Punjabi propaganda that he even ignores the emergence of the movement of Sikhism, which was one of the manifestations of Punjabi nationalism that later unfolded into the Punjabi invasion of the Pashtun lands under the leadership of Ranjit Singh. He also deceptively calls Ayub Khan non-Punjabi whereas he was a Punjabi albeit with claims of Pashtun descent.

One can also glaringly see how the author goes against his own contentions by calling Nawaz Sharif a Kashmiri whereas according to his defnition, a Punjabi can be anyone that inhabits the Punjab irrespective of the language he/she speaks (which can even be Pasho). One is appalled at such daringness where one conradicts oneself in order to help advance a propaganda line.

Nevertheless, anyone interested in appreciating the reality of Punjabi nationalism should study "Nationalities of Pakistan" by Gangovsky, where the celebrated Russian ethnologist deliberates upon the formation of the Punjabi nation.

I completely disagree with the claim that Punjabi is not an ethnicity. It IS the name of an entire ethnic group of people. However, if you must argue that, no, it's not an ethnic group and give your reasons, then you can argue the exact same for Pashtuns and all other ethnic groups of the world and give the exact same reason.

Otherwise, the article is well-written. Keep it up!

To add on to Toranama's well written reply. How is Nawaz a Kashmiri? Doesn't he speak paharri? I mean if panjabi is not a nation, how is Kashmir? Kashmir a valley and picturesque land where people speak koshur (dardic), paharii, among other languages. Are Sudhans (who are of Pashtun descent) and Sadozais kashmiris too? lolzz I think attaching and not panjabi to Nawaz disapproved his own basic premise on Panjab being an ethnicity.

The fundamental fallacy/dishonesty of this article is, it tries, most probably on behest of vested powers, to speak for Punjabis. No person on earth has the right to define or describe the nationalist feelings a community. It is only the right of Fakhar Zaman, Hanif Ramay, etc. to define what is a Punjabi identity and what should be its political destiny.

Moreover, this is also a lame logic that nations are based on race. Neither Pashtuns are one race. Modern nationalism is asserted through other feelings or aspirations e.g., ethno-cultural oneness, territorial adjacency, etc. The definition of ethnicity is also a fluid one i.e., in one context it may imply one group of people and in another a different group.

Nevertheless, the non-existance of Punjabi nation has also been used against Pashtuns. When Bacha Khan propopsed Pashtunistan as the name of NWFP in 1948, Liaqat Ali Khan had confronted it on the ground that Punjabi appallation is due to territory and not due to people because there isn't such thing as Punjabi nation.

The issue of the existence or lack thereof of Punjabis as a nation is quite besides the issue. I, being a Marxist, do not consider the 'national' or 'ethnic' boundaries important per se. One must understand that the oppressor class in Paksitan is composed of the fuedal, industrialist and religious elements of all the nationalities. For example, the Saifullahs of Lakki, are in as much oppressors of Pashtuns as are the Punjabis. That having been said, the economic and political currents and forces in Pakistan are very ethnically tinged indeed.
Secondly, the strength of Punjabis as a nation or of the Punjabi language is not be the indicators of our strength. The Punjabi people or the Punjabi langauge is not the benchmark we should judge ourselves in relation to. Pashtuns have their specific and peculiar National Existence which is the backbone of the stability of Central and South Asia. This affords us opportunities as well as potential pitfalls.
Thirdly, this issue of blaming Punjabis is the weakest part of this essay/rant. We blame Punjabis because they are to blame. They have destroyed our political, social, economic and cultural existence in order to safeguard a state that is only in benefit of them. And what are the Pashtuns to blame for? That they live in such an important geo-strategic area? That the Tsarist Russia was expansionist? That the British India was afraid of the influence of the Tsarist Russia? That the US and the Imperialists wanted a state and a lapdog in the South Asian region against Communism? I don't understand why do we blame the Pashtuns for everything? Yes, had it been the case that the Punajbis had won the mastery of the region because of their superior military prowess or technological advancement or intellectual and philosophical depth, I would have happily surrendered to their hegemony, but the state of Paksitan was presented to them in a platter by the British. They do not deserve respect or admiration for this.
Of the Punjabis being not the rulers of Paksitan: Osho malgariya, don't you think we are re-inventing the wheel here? This has been discussed to the farthest extent with the consensus that all the policies of the Pakistani state are devised in such a way as to favor the oppressor class only which is dominated by the Punjabis.
You suggest the reformist approach to the Pashtun cause ie education, capacity building etc. This is based on the fallacy that it is possible to educate the masses without being the sovereign of the people. That the masses remain illiterate and open to their indoctrination is in the interest of the Pakistani state. Why would they allow it?

Do take the trouble and check a **** government issued "LOCAL DOMICILE" of a Punjabi and you will see what is written in its ethnic/tribal space.
If an inhabitant of Punjab is considered to be a Punjabi by region and it does not constitute for ethnicity then why are Pashtuns and Balochs of Balochistan classified by their ethnicity not their locality/province/region?
Why not call all the inhabitants of Balochistan as Balochs/Balochistanis, though people might belong to different ethnicities and have different cultural and linguistic backgrounds (per your logic on Punjab) but they dwell in a common province and thus shall be referred to by a common identity,RIGHT?

I am happy friends are writing comments on the article. I ll reply to all such comments in part II of the article.

One request I ll make here that the whole concentration should not be on the issue whether Punjabi is a race or nation or ethnicity or not. Other contents of the article may also be criticized.

And this section as earlier said is not for posts but for long essays, articles etc so the comments should also be long and scholarly not the usual remarks on posts of other sections. So far the comments here are excellent and very scholarly.

Friends should also publish there own essays, articles etc too in this section and may also write a counter article in response to other articles as this one.

                    Common Punjabis have one rule:
"Live and let others to live"
They r not as racist as Pashtuns are, but actually they r developed than us, so our interneti national folks hate them. On the other hand, majority of us (living in Afghankhwa) also hate n condemn farsiwans.
Its style of pashtuns to degrade others by calling punjabi or farsiwan, while our interneti folks can do nothing in actual to increase the status of our common people!

For the love of God!!! Did you not see that Punjabi guy after the Lahore blasts say on TV "Wo Dehshatgard Koi Pathaan type bandaa thaa."

We respect the common Punjabi folk. We just cannot sit idle when our Pashtun/Afghan Millat is in such a sad state while the Punjabi elite are living their luxurious lives.
And how are Punjabis more developed than us? You seem like a typical wannabe Pathan-Punjabi to me.

^You cannot discount the fact that one of the reasons that the Panjabees are more developed than the Pashtoons, is because the state apparatus works better for their interests.

You are right Son of Mountains, that there are a few too many Internet Warriors out there who ignore the ground realilty, but you know, conversely there are many Pashtoons in the homeland who haven't tapped into the potential of the Internet and other technologies to help support their political ambitions.

Let's face it, there is a struggle raging through the Pashtoon lands - and if the sentiment is ideological/religious (and is not nationalism) the perception is that this is still anti-state. Rights/wrongs aside, the facts are that there is still some form of resistance and that many Pashtoons are subject to policies that do not favour. What would be of better for us of course, is to channel that struggle into something that would benefit us more. This probably is the most important aspect - self betterment and not relying on or blaming others. Ironically though, it is precisely this spirit of independence that has been the reasons that many (non-Pashtoons) have interfered in the past.

The reality is that today, as in the past, outside forces have a stake in our discord and are willing to use Pashtoons to advance their own causes.

Malgariya, what are 'these' ground realities that you speak of? Of what value to the Pashtun cause are they? How would their realization (supposing that we haven't yet) help our cause? I pray to Dear Lord that you have clarity regarding our cause.

Mentioning about varied culture of India.......the culture, language, outfit everything changes with the change in a state in the country of India...its difficult to count on fingers the different cultures of people in India...

also i liked the following part

Another resembling case is the name Hindu. Hindu is again not a race or nation, the people living near the river Indus are Hindus, whether they speak Hindi or not, there are thousands of languages in India, thousands of races and many religions all are not Hindus . Another connotation of being Hindu is religiously Hindu, but again Hinduism is not purely a religion .Its a social order. People can take name from the area where they live but this does not make them a race. It will have a name like Punjabis, living in the area of Punjab but racially they are either Gujars, Rajpoots, Chudris, Sardars, Jats, even Baluchs, Pashtuns etc...

very true... irrespective of religion people belonging to India which is also known as Hindustan are known as Hindustani's which has got nothing to do with the religion, caste, creed or culture of people belonging to Hindustan which was also formerly known as Bharat...

No one insulted Panjabis as a nation. Loll if some of these "internet folks" hated them over development then their standards of development is low. There are countless more developed societies. I think you are bitter that so many pashtunkhwa pashtuns have a negative view of Pakistan. You are projected that over here. manana
