very insightful and relevant argument, this guy is saying a lot of pertinent and valid claims. However the problem I have is he is giving a false dichotomy that we have to either forget this or embrace this. And makes a false association that Arab= Muslim, the people involved in Qurtoub, Qahirah , Baghdad etc. were Muslims predominantly whether or not they were Arabs.

I am not seeing any evidence that Islam itself prevents modernity. We have seen the Egyptian society who are Muslim demand democracy and freedom, but it is the West who is putting obsticles in its path from evolving. So how is Islam preventing modernity.

Islam is not against modernity, however it would be defiantly against "westernization". islam can not be compatible with such a opposite life style.

imams that tell a kuwaiti woman that sex slaves are still a valid option are not ready for modernity. many muslims seem to be able to live within the western systems, comfortably.
many seem to be pining for the past lifestyle.
afghanistan and other muslim countries seem to have this issue to deal with, where some want to incorporate the modern and some don't.
but what do you consider modernityas opposed to westernisation, karachi?

The same is being done by Mullah Omar and company demanding democracy and freedom to rule exclusively with sword imposing an outdated moral system of bygone ages and limit freedom (all sort religious, sectarian, political, intellectual, etc.) of others. Let us see how the Akhwanis of Egypt tolerate and promote rationality, the diversity of belief, traditions, and thought, and freedom of speech and intellect in Egyptian society.

If Islam were so effective as a political and governing system, Taleban would be successful in feeding the hungry populace.

Although, one doesn't agree totally with the guy in the video, there is no doubt that Islamic societies have become consumerist societies for the material products of modernity. By the material products of modernity I mean the gadgets like cars, planes, ships, even the minutest things. One should not even talks of ideas, thoughts, artistic creativity, etc.

Islamic society is a totally dependent society today ---a kind of rural/primitive society that runs on a barter system exchanging raw material with the civilized world for technology and governing models. It borrows ideas and solutions from the rest of the world and cannot generate its own ideas and solutions. For the last few hundred years, not even a single system of thought, theory, scientific or philosophical model, etc. has been developed by a Muslim.

Problem-solving ability, engineering knowledge, technological know-how and innovation, scientific curiosity and explorations, etc. are nill in Muslim societies. Saudi Arabia is the best example of this consumerism of modernity where you have sky-rise buildings, wide roads, best cars etc.(all products of modernity) but where humans using these things are closed to questions like how and why.
