Default Tibetan man sets himself on fire in New Delhi - 03-26-2012, 04:48 PM

(Reuters) - A Tibetan man set himself on fire in New Delhi on Monday at a protest against a visit by Chinese president Hu Jintao, who is due to arrive in India later this week for a summit meeting.

Pictures taken by a Reuters photographer show the protester enveloped in flames, before being taken to hospital with burns on his torso. It was not clear how serious his injuries were.

Thirty Tibetans have set themselves on fire, mostly in southwestern China, in the past year to protest against Chinese rule in Tibet, according to Tibetan rights groups. At least 20 of them have died.

I don't why they are setting themselves on fire, just protects like a normal person would do.
This news remind me of that song in Scarface call She's on Fire. lol

Maybe its because they eschew violence and setting your own self on fire is the most extreme for of non-violent protest.

you might as well be promoting violence rather than setting yourself on fire. i expected better sense from monks for some reason.

How does setting oneself on fire actually help?

It shows the desperation of the people, have some shame than to sit back like arrogant people and make a mockery of someone that is clearly disturbed by certain things that actual drive him to kill himself, you read an article about a man and you suddently think you have the authority to judge whether the man has sence or not or what you expect of him. keep in mind its not just one, there have been many similar cases, these people are hurt by something which they regard more than their own lives.

I couldn't have put it better. Over 20 monks have self-immolated themselves in China over the past 3 months.

It shows how deeply frustrated somebody can be to take such a step.
